The Rieder Meat Market is the oldest operating business in downtown Delano.

  • 1876 1st Building built by S. H. Dyers as a meat market
  • 1897 Bought by Frank Speckel & John Schaust continued as a meat market
  • 1901 Building purchased by Herman Adler (Adler's Meat Market) from Speckel & Schaust

In 1911 the business was purchased by Leonard J. Rieder & August Schilling (Rieder & Schilling Meat Market). Schilling bought cattle and L.J. ran the meat market.

1920 2nd Building constructed.

1946 Schilling died and L.J. became the owner.

1947-1956 Rieder Brothers was run by L.J. 's two sons: Lawrence senior (Bud) & Leonard (who died in 1956)

The present building was constructed in 1920. Active in local politics: both L.J. (Leonard John) and his son Laurence served as Mayors of Delano.

  • 1976: Bud Rieder's son, Laurence Jr., took over the business
  • 2019: Betty Rieder, Bud's widow, still does the bookkeeping at 92 years old!
