Juliette S. art 1 portfolio / winter 2022 / Strath haven h.s.

During this project, I feel that I learned a ton about shading. It really opened my horizons to different types of shading. In the past usually, I only did cross-hatching. It was just what I was used to. I have been doing a lot more pencil drawings in finished now thanks to learning about shading. Because I used to only do sketching and didn't ever really finish them. So I now found out I really enjoy doing pencil drawings. I definitely think I learned the most out of this project than any other we did in this class. I enjoyed it a lot. During the process, I really was not excited to do the stippling. It takes longer and is boring to me. But I powered through and in the end, they actually ended up being my favorite parts of the piece. And in doing the project I really learned now to use stippling more efficiently in my opinion than in the past when we practiced, I didn’t really know how to use it at al
I never really did patterns with watercolor so this was a little bit difficult for me, especially in the small boxes. I struggled with doing equal solid colors with the watercolors because I’m used to blending them and using different transparencies on top of the other. So, I didn’t really enjoy this one as much because I think it's more fun using different colors and transparencies. The end result was not my favorite, I honestly do not really like it too much, I think it looks a bit messy, however, I do like the fact it was out of my comfort zone, and I can really clearly see my mistakes and where I could’ve done better or fixed something. If I could re-do this project I would definitely use less amount of diverse colors and use more of a limited palette. Because I think it made it looks a bit messy in the background and if I used less I think it would look a bit cleaner and neater.
For this drawing, I definitely chose a bit of a difficult idea to do. But I really wanted to do it because I really liked the idea of doing the 4 faces of the Beatles. It took a lot of planning in my sketchbook and tweaking. The reason it was a difficult idea is that it was 4 faces, and while doing them no same shade could touch, so doing realistic faces while doing what the requirements were was a bit difficult. So, I then decided instead of doing realistic faces I would do more of a line design for them where it still had their features but it was more of a combination of shapes that were simple. This made it much easier to do. Throughout the actual drawing part, it was definitely a bit difficult to plan out where to put what shade because two of the same shade not touching is definitely a challenge to do. In this drawing, I can see where I was still learning how to do this, where I did better with the planning, and where I did not do so good. In some parts, I can see where I could have gone over it again in pencil to make it more solid. I also would like to plan out the peace sign overlapping on the first face if I were to do this again, because it doesn’t really match up with the others as it’s not as clear, and it’s a bit more hidden. Right after I finished this piece I really didn’t like how it turned out, but looking back on it now, it's really not that bad, but I could have made it better.
Throughout this course, I think I learned a lot. I really got out of my comfort zone for some of the projects and I think it really helped me improve. The first project we really did was drawing hands which, I really never did, because of how difficult I thought it was but I did it and improved significantly, especially using the skills I was taught. Which was to use your real-life hand as a reference. This helped me a lot and was good to use because I could use it anytime and anywhere I was. So it helped me to practice, and now I really enjoy drawing hands. I think overall this class helped me a lot to get out of my comfort zone for what I do in art. Because before this class, I really just stuck to what I knew and didn’t really feel like trying new material. But I found out so many new strategies, techniques, and materials to use for both my personal sketchbooks and art in general. I really enjoyed this class and improved a lot through the course.
