Course 34147 Empowering Educators: Scaffolds for English Learners with Disabilities (EL SWD) with Dorina Sackman-Ebuwa. In this three-hour in-person session Dorina Sackman-Ebuwa addresses scaffolding for English Learners (EL) and students who are ELs with Disabilities (EL SWD). An experienced EL educator, Ms. Sackman-Ebuwa focuses on language acquisition, multiliteracy, reading, academic language, cultural competency, differentiated instruction, equity, social-emotional learning, and emotional intelligence. In this session, the participant will engage in the modeling of strategies, focusing on scaffolds, taking on the role of the academic language learner to understand what it means to be a struggling but determined reader and writer. The environment is intended to be engaging, safe, and comfortable for educators to ask questions, express opinions, and share their expertise. Participants walk away with ten immediate implementable strategies. As a result, educators are engaged in an “edutaining” experience that validates their incredible teaching efforts while enjoying learning! This session meets the annual EL SWD requirement for EL instruction for 2023-24. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Course 36290 Gifted ELs: Helping Schools Identify an Under-Identified Population with Dr. Jana Moore and Kristin Henry. This session focuses on five specific strategies teachers can use within their schools to increase the awareness and identification of language learners as potentially gifted students. Drawing from examples currently used in a middle school, session participants will have the opportunity to apply their learning to their own educational settings. Participants will develop an understanding of the current situation in terms of the gifted identification process and setbacks for English language learners (ELLs). They will be aware of and evaluate five areas of growth for schools (teaching awareness, collaboration, parent involvement, multiple assessments, and the strength-based mindset) in terms of how to better identify ELLs as gifted students. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. or 10 - 11 a.m.

Course 36349 Serving Multilingual Learners Principal Cohort 2 (Stanford University) with Steven Weiss, Dr. Jeff Zwiers, and the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET). Multilingual learners (MLs) require the appropriate programs, policies and practices that take into account the heterogeneity of students designated as English learners, e.g. recently arrived students, migrant students, long term English learners, etc. They need teachers across all content areas to have expertise in developing their content understanding and language simultaneously. Students and teachers need administrators with the knowledge and skills to, listen to students and teachers, reinforce areas of strength and address areas of growth, observe instruction and provide effective coaching, analyze, improve, and create effective assessments, and craft and support effective policies and practices at the system level. This course is led by Stanford University leaders, Dr. Jeff Zwiers, Steven Weiss, and Dr. Tammy Wu Moriarty. The work in the course will build the capacity of PWCS principals to strengthen the overall system that supports the learning and growth of multilingual learners. Principals will work with the Stanford University team to create a systemic plan for their schools, aligned to PWCS documents (Regulation 600-4, EL Instructional Look Fors Protocol Handbook, PWCS Strategic Plan). The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 8:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m. Registration is restricted to school administrators. NOTE: The Associate Superintendent should be aware of and recommend the principal's enrollment in this course. This course is limited to 20 K-12 school principals in Cohort 2. This course is not recommended for administrators in their first year serving as school principals.

Course 36402 Engaging English-Language Learners with iPad (Apple) with Ellen Loos and the Apple Team. Participants will join Team experts from Apple during this hands-on workshop. iPad supports students where they are in their learning journeys to meet their individual skills, interests, levels, and learning styles. English Learners can instantly create with iPad—they can draw, record audio, take pictures, and translate text. Built-in accessibility features and creativity tools provide diverse and authentic options for ELLs to improve language skills, practice oral language, retain new vocabulary, and communicate in a variety of ways. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Course 36099 Teaching English Learners with Sheltered Content Instruction Year 1 with Casey Ward and Liesl Yeskey. This session consists of Year 1 of a three-part series that comprehensibly addresses the indicators outlined in the Instructional 'Look Fors' Protocol for English Learners handbook. The three-part series addresses the 17 PWCS-required classroom indicators for professional training in EL techniques. The targeted audience to participate in this course are non-ESL educators certified in elementary, core subjects, reading, specialty areas, and special education who instruct English Learners. This course series focuses on the practical classroom application of instructional strategies within the context of the standards-based unit, lesson planning, and assessment. The Year 1 sessions include the first 13 hours out of a total of 40 hours of professional learning. This is a hybrid course where two sessions are in person. one session is in Zoom and includes asynchronous study in Canvas. This session meets in person for the kick-off meeting at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Please refer to the course description for the additional required meeting dates.

Course 36321 Models in Co-teaching with Casey Ward and Katie Min. This session introduces seven (7) models of co-teaching suitable for instructing English Learners. Variables to consider when choosing the best model to fit a specific context is addressed in the workshop. This engaging session discusses considerations for establishing parity between co-teachers. Participants will have opportunities to review co-teaching scenarios for different grade levels. This session addresses the Culturally Responsive Classroom Indicator for co-teaching and differentiation. This session meets the annual co-teaching requirement for EL instruction for 2023-24. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Course 35045 Everyone is a Math Person, Including YOU with Asmahan Jackson, Kelly Pratte, and Stephanie Swadley. Join the math team as they explore with you language-rich experiences for students in all classrooms from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The focus will be on performance-based tasks, Universal Design for Learning, and researched based differentiation tools and strategies to integrate academic language development in mathematics classrooms. Opportunities to explore the interrelationship between language and mathematics content are provided. Jump into needs-based scaffolds, strategies, and interventions for ELs. PWCS is committed to engaging English Learners (ELs) in language-rich experiences across all content areas. (PWCS Vision 2025 Strategic Plan, Objective 1.1) This course addresses the Culturally Responsive Classroom Instructional Indicators on Differentiation, Scaffold Content, and Sheltered Instruction. Course 35035 Empowering Multilingual Learners in Science with Meghan Waymire and Sarah Plumitallo. Science standards and assessments have evolved in a way that requires students to read and make meaning while also using their content knowledge. Presented through the 5E Model of instruction, this session explores how regular and intentional integration of the 7 Steps of a Language-Rich, Interactive Classroom can support English Language Learners with success in science before, during, and after assessment. This course addresses the Culturally Responsive Classroom Instructional Indicators on Differentiation, Scaffold Content, and Sheltered Instruction. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Course 34109 Lexia Data Coaching for Elementary with Jill Lenihan. This session provides training to elementary teachers. In this session, teachers familiar with Lexia will focus on program updates/enhancements, student reports, and instructional resources to support instruction. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 8:30 - 10 a.m.

Course 33599 Science of Reading - Lexia Implementation with Jill Lenihan. The purpose of this course is to assist the Elementary educator in easily implementing Lexia® Core5® Reading in the classroom to support student literacy success. By the end of this course, an educator will be equipped to successfully integrate Core5 into an instructional routine. This is a one-hour course. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 10:15 - 11:45 a.m.

Course 33600 Lexia - Implementing PowerUp with Jill Lenihan. This session is for educators teaching ELs using Lexia for the first time in a secondary setting. The purpose of this course is to support the Secondary educator in quickly and easily getting Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® running to support student literacy success. By the end of this course, the educator will be equipped to successfully integrate Core5 into an instructional routine. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 12:30 - 2 p.m.

Course 34106 Lexia Data Coaching for Secondary Teachers with Jill Lenihan. This session provides training to secondary teachers using Lexia Power Up with ELs and all students. This workshop demonstrates how to use the data from Lexia to support instruction. In this session, teachers familiar with Lexia will focus on program updates/enhancements, student reports, and instructional resources to support instruction. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 2:15 - 3:45 p.m.

Course 34105 Ellevation Math: Getting Started for Educators with the Ellevation Team. This is an educator’s first introduction to Ellevation Math. Participants will learn how Ellevation can be used with their students. During the session, participants will learn the value of Ellevation Math and how it benefits secondary students. They will walk away knowing how, when, and where to use it throughout the instructional cycle, and effectively get started in these classrooms. Participants should bring the PWCS laptop to the training. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. or 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Course 34774 Ellevation Math: Workshop for Educators with the Ellevation Team. This session provides educators the opportunity to reflect on wins (or challenges) they have experienced while engaging students with Ellevation Math. We’ll deepen knowledge and provide best practices for connecting Ellevation Math to the classroom, as well as how teachers can access and analyze Primer results data to support their students. Teachers who already have one or more completed Primers will get the most out of this workshop. Prerequisite: Getting Started training participants should bring a laptop to the training. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 12:30 -1:30 p.m. or 2 - 3 p.m.

Course 36356 Effectively Using Wixie with Multilingual Instruction with Scott Loomis of Wixie. Few elementary tools provide the opportunity for students to creatively and meaningfully demonstrate their content knowledge. This is especially true for use with English Learners (ELs). Wixie's tools and features like the audio and video recorders provide an easy outlet to efficiently capture students' true understanding. Couple this with 3000+ pre-made templates and the ability to export artifacts, Wixie screams for EL teachers to utilize it! Time to explore and create assignments will also be provided. Oh, and plenty of Dad Jokes will be shared. The session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, 12:30 - 3 p.m.

Course 36348 Serving Multilingual Learners for Teachers Cohort 2 (Stanford University) with Steven Weiss, Dr. Laura Hill-Bonnet, Dr. Jeff Zwiers, and the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET). Multilingual learners (MLs) require the appropriate programs, policies, and practices that take into account the heterogeneity of students designated as English learners, e.g. recently arrived students, migrant students, long-term English learners, etc. They need teachers across all content areas to have expertise in developing their content understanding and language simultaneously. This course is led by Stanford University leaders, Dr. Jeff Zwiers, Dr. Steven Weiss, and Dr. Tammy Wu Moriarty. The work in the course will build the capacity of PWCS educators to strengthen the overall system that supports the learning and growth of multilingual learners. This course will meet in person on August 1, 2023, October 11, 2023, January 31, 2024, and April 9, 2024. NOTE: The educator's school principal should be aware of and recommend the educator's enrollment in this course.

Course 35183 7 Steps to a Language-rich Interactive Classroom K-12 with Dr. Carol Salva and Adrian Mendoza. This in-person workshop with a Seidlitz Education presenter will help all teachers transform their classrooms into vibrant spaces where students can use academic language to talk, read, write, and think about each lesson’s content. This 7 Steps training outlines a dynamic process for structuring, planning, and facilitating a language-rich classroom This session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, July 31 and August 1, 2023, 8:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. (choose a three-hour session).

Course 35184 7 Steps to a Language-rich Interactive Classroom K-12 for Principals and Assistant Principals with Dr. Carol Salva. This in-person workshop with Seidlitz Education's presenters supports school principals as teachers transform their classrooms into vibrant spaces where students can use academic language to talk, read, write, and think about each lesson’s content. This 7 Steps training outlines a dynamic process for structuring, planning, and facilitating a language-rich classroom. This session provides effective strategies for administrators so that they are familiar with what instruction should "look like" and "sound like" when observing teachers instructing English Learners during implementation. This session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, on July 31 and August 1, 2023, 12:30 p.m. each day (choose a three-hour session).

Course 34148 Math Sheltered Instruction for All Learners and ELs Overview with Adrian Mendoza. Are you ready to provide sheltered instructional strategies to engage your English Learners and ALL students in your math classroom using 7 Steps strategies? This language-rich interactive workshop focuses on mathematical processes that our students need to acquire and demonstrate mathematical understanding. Participants explore language development and mathematical mindsets from the math cycle. In this session, Math teachers and coaches learn how to support a range of student needs as students communicate mathematical ideas and reasoning using multiple representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate, create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas, analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas and display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written or oral communication. This session meets in person at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, on August 1, 2023, 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.
