New Year, Same Family.

Happy New Year, KSU TRIO Family!

As this new chapter begins, we would just like to say that we are so grateful for you all. If there is anything the past few years have taught us, it is to expect the unexpected! We're sure that this upcoming year will be full of changes, but one of the things we can count on is our KSU TRiO family to be there for us and make this a year to remember.

With 2022 coming to a close, we cannot help but reflect on all of our students' accomplishments and growth. You guys are doing great! Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in last year, and you are building skills that you will use for the rest of your lives. We can't wait to see all that you do in 2023!

Here's to you all, thank you for making 2022 such an awesome year.

Treat Yo Self

Amid all the New Years Resolutions, it's easy to start off feeling super motivated, but sometimes that motivation can fizzle out and turn into burn out. We want to make sure that you can stick to your resolutions and take care of yourself too!

January has been designated as Mental Wellness Month as an effort to recognize the importance of attending to our mental health. Take care of yourself, inside and out. Mental Health is one of the most important aspects to our quality of life, and if we feel off, it impacts everything. Remember to take care of yourself and ask for help when needed. KSU TRIO has quite a few Mental Health Workshops on the schedule this spring, so please make sure to take advantage of them!

Mental Wellness is more than checking off a few boxes on your To-Do List, it's about an approach to life! Here's a few things you can do to promote your Mental Wellness now -

1. Value Yourself

Be kind to yourself! Treat yourself with the kindness and respect you extend to others, and try to avoid needless self-criticism. In the midst of school and obligations, make sure to set aside time for what makes you happy, like your hobbies and the people you love.

2. Take care of your Body

Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Be sure you're eating nutritious meals, drinking plenty of water, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep.

3. Take care of your mind

Taking care of your mind looks different for everybody. Do what you know is rewarding for you long term. Make sure to surround yourself with good people, volunteer your time and energy to help causes you believe in, and take time to relax and rest.

4. Learn how to deal with stress

Stress normally gets a bad wrap, but it can be good or bad. Good stress can motivate you, but bad stress can overwhelm you. To work on re-contextualizing the bad stress in our lives, it helps to learn good coping mechanisms. Some healthy coping mechanisms can include exercise, meditation, and even humor.

5. Get help when you need it

If you find yourself experiencing anything that feels like you might need help, or even if you just need someone to talk to, we are here for you. Reach out to a staff member, and we would be happy to talk it out and point you in the right direction! We really do care about you all, and we hope that you know that we will always be here for you to lean on.

Honoring Dr. King's Legacy

Each year on the third Monday of January, our nation observes the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This month, KSU TRIO would like to take this time to celebrate the impact of Dr. King's legacy and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for true justice and equality.

"INJUSTICE ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE." - DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Dr. King's legacy as a preacher and activist who helped lead American Civil Rights Movement was integral in fixing a major wrong in the history of the United States. It is because of people like Dr. King we know that we leave a lasting impact on our communities. What do you want your legacy to be?

"WE MUST USE TIME CREATIVELY, IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THE TIME IS ALWAYS RIPE TO DO RIGHT." - DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

The city of Baltimore has turned some heads this year by announcing that for the third year in a row, they will not hold a MLK Day Parade. The parade hasn't been held since 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions, but "now, in 2023, it is a conscious decision to celebrate Dr. King's legacy through a day of service rather than a parade," Baltimore officials wrote in a released statement.

BOPA cited in its statement Martin Luther King Jr. Day as the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, so Baltimoreans are encouraged to participate in this year's National Day of Service on Jan. 16 by signing up to volunteer with a local, regional or national organization. You can read more about the city's statement here.

At KSU TRIO, this made us reflect on how we choose to celebrate Dr. King's life. Regardless of whether or not you choose to participate in the National Day of Service on MLK Day this year, we would love your feedback! What sort of service projects would you be interested in? What would you like to see KSU TRiO do for service? Fill out the survey here for your service project proposal to be considered.
