Operations Department

1/2023 Board of Education Meeting Recap

Mr. Scarcipino of the Operations Team gives monthly updates at the Board of Education meeting, often presenting about projects completed, or upcoming initiatives. Here’s a snippet from January's BOE meeting.

OPS By the Numbers

7 Out-of-Service buses traded in...

3 new buses on their way...

2 new buses and a van coming soon!

Transportation

During our January collaboration day, the bus drivers and aides spent time reviewing ALICE protocol and how it relates to the bus. We were reminded to stay vigilant for things that might seem “off” and reviewed strategies for keeping our students safe on the bus.

We also did some role playing with drivers making mock calls home to parents when students are displaying minor behaviors on the bus. This will allow the drivers to effectively communicate with parents before minor behaviors become major problems!

Technology

Over the last few weeks, the tech department has worked with members of our maintenance team to install additional cameras throughout the district. Doing this has added another layer of security and safety for students, staff, and community members who use our buildings daily.

Like last month, we are happy to share that Chromebook repair numbers have gone down since rolling out our 1:1 district device initiative. Students, thank you for continuing to use best practices when handling devices. Additionally, thank you staff and guardians for reminding students to treat their devices with respect.

As mentioned previously in our OPS Newsletter, this year, a technology fee has been put into place for students to enable the continuation of the 1:1 initiative where all students have access to their own Chromebook in the classroom (with take-home rights as needed). This fee can be paid by logging into your PaySchool account. For additional information on this fee, please click here.

The technology department would also like to give a special shoutout to maintenance department employee Joe Schuster for moving district testing devices from building-to-building throughout the months of December and January. Doing this ensured that all buildings were properly equipped for MAP testing and end-of-course exams!

Food Services

Food Service collaboration day was used to revamp the Streetsboro lunch and breakfast menus. We added new menu items that should excite the students. Items like: Italian Stromboli, Baja Fish Tacos, and Beef and Cheese Loaded Fries. The Nutrition Group Corporate Chef was able to do training at the high school to teach the staff about new menu items and ways to get creative with food. Keep an eye on NutriSlice for upcoming, new menu items.

Starting in the month of February, we will be having a treat day for all students. Every student that participates in the lunch program will be given an extra treat that day. The dates are February 7th and 28th.

It is never too late to fill out a free and reduced application to see if you qualify for the program. If you have any questions please email them to mpettitt@scsrockets.org.

Facilities/Maintenance

This month we launched a feedback process for our maintenance department through which we can provide details about the state of our facilities, give guidance to teams, and share what works well.

In addition, we are constantly updating our ability to react to the needs of our staff and students, and have already met with, and planned for, several events later this spring. Typically, the spring means lots of fun activities for our students, along with state mandated testing - both of which the Operations Team, and our Facilities Team take an active part in. From reconfiguring classrooms, preparing for concerts, and attending to equipment moves, our teams handle it all.

We continue to see heavy use of our buildings from our internal sports teams, community members, and various other partners - each event scheduled, managed, and staffed by our Facilities team. You can learn more about using our facilities, here: https://bit.ly/RocketRent

Business Operations

The Operations Department successfully negotiated a new thirty-six month lease agreement with Lake Business Products. This agreement will bring new copy devices to Streetsboro City School District this summer so they will be ready for when staff and students return.

Streetsboro City School District was able to trade in seven buses that were not in use to Rush Truck Centers of Ohio. Selling aging buses in the District’s bus fleet along with purchasing five new buses (on order) and a van helps ensure that the District is properly managing the bus fleet. The District has the ability to purchase buses with Permanent Improvement funds.

As a reminder from the previous Operations newsletter, Permanent improvement means any property, asset, or improvement with an estimated life or usefulness of five years or more, including land and interests therein, and reconstructions, enlargements, and extensions thereof having an estimated life of usefulness of five years or more (ORC 5705.01 F).

Permanent improvement dollars are a major funding source to help Streetsboro City School District operate efficiently and effectively each year.

Want to Win Some Cool Stuff?

Last month's trivia question was, ""C.J. Scarcipino is our district's hardworking Chief Business Officer. You may know C.J. from running the OPS team, presenting at a board meeting, or even directing traffic in the morning. But, do you know what C.J. stands for? "

We had 6 correct guesses of Carl Joseph, but ultimately the random wheel of names crowned Mrs. Missy Paden our winner! Congratulations!

Thank you to all who particiapted!

Click on the button below to launch our monthly OPS Trivia. Make sure you fill out the entire form so we can contact you if you are the big winner!
