CSUN Canvas Course Template

As you gear up to create your Summer and Fall courses, we recommend utilizing the newly introduced CSUN Canvas Template. This template has been thoughtfully crafted in accordance with the CSU's Quality Learning and Teaching Standards, emphasizing equity-minded teaching, universal design, and accessibility principles.

Get a head start on your upcoming courses by adopting the CSUN Canvas Template today. Learn more about CSUN Canvas Template on the CSUN website. Need a place to practice using the template? Email FTC@csun.edu to request a Sandbox course.

During the summer, Instructional Technology will be holding Template Clinics every Tuesday to help you implement the template for your course. Visit the IT Workshop Calendar for dates and times of upcoming clinics.

Generative AI Detection using TurnItIn

The rise of generative AI products like ChatGPT has significantly increased and as awareness of these tools grows, so does the likelihood that students will use them for their assignments. These AI-powered writing tools can generate text that is often indistinguishable from that of a human writer.

Fortunately TurnItIn, a popular plagiarism detection tool used at CSUN, has added the ability to possibly detect the likelihood of AI generated content in student submissions. This summer we will have several workshops demonstrating this function as well as answer questions you may have regarding AI generated content. See our Workshop Calendar for dates and times.

Canvas Insights Training Course

Have you ever wanted an easy way to send messages to students in your class that haven’t logged into your Canvas course? Or who has not clicked on the Syllabus?

CSUN has developed a new tool called Canvas Insights, specifically designed to facilitate communication between faculty members and individual students in their classes, centered around early alerts. Research suggests early alerts have been recognized as effective in student retention.

You can learn how to use Canvas Insights by enrolling in our self-paced course titled “Insights on Canvas Data for Student Success”.

Podcasting with Tammy Trujillo

Our students are listening to podcasts - lots of them. And podcasts have quickly become one of the most active forms of communicating ideas, so now is the time to think about integrating them into your classes and into your methods of engaging with your students.

This is a three-week course, four hours per week. The goal is to take an idea for a podcast and create it along with the infrastructure that goes along with it. It is expected that those completing the course could continue the podcast following the conclusion of the class or start another one on their own.

The Five Best Practices for Using Panopto

Panopto is an easy-to-use lecture capture program available to all CSUN faculty and students. Its major feature is the ability to caption lectures or presentations, enabling students to search for key points and improve their studying experience. Save Zoom recordings to the cloud to automatically upload them to Panopto and access its capabilities. Here are the top five best practices when using Panopto.

1. Use your PowerPoint presentations in Panopto.

Panopto can take your PowerPoint presentations to the next level. Using Panopto you can record yourself from anywhere while capturing your slide at the same time. When you do this your lecture will be automatically captioned and your presentations will be indexed and completely searchable, providing students with more options to view your lecture.

2. Creating an in-video quiz

With Panopto you can insert quiz questions into your recorded lectures. You can even require students to answer a question before proceeding with the video. Quiz feedback options, such as explanations for correct answers and quiz retakes, are also available

3. Canvas integration

Canvas and Panopto work great together. Each Canvas course is automatically linked to Panopto, and if you create a Panopto video quiz (as mentioned above) you can use that as an assessment that will get recorded in the Canvas Gradebook.

4. Easily store and share your recordings

Panopto's videos have a longer shelf-life than Zoom Cloud recordings. Unlike Zoom Cloud recoridngs which get deleted after a few months, Panopto recordings remain stored for significantly longer, and instead of getting deleted they will be archived. And since Panopto saves videos to the cloud, sharing videos with students and colleagues is as easy as a few clicks.

5. Editing your recordings

Easily edit any uploaded lecture or presentation, including trimming the beginning and end of your lectures or add content you might have missed. You can also edit captions, add new ones, and create audio descriptions for students with hearing impairments.
