Create a data visualization based on a freely-available dataset. Any visualization software (Tableau, PowerBI, R, Python, Qlik, etc) is acceptable. Submissions may be in the form of PDFs or links to public dashboards. They will be scored by a panel of judges based on the quality of their analysis, design, and storytelling. Need help getting started with data viz? We currently have many online tutorials and resources in the library resource called SAGE Research Methods: Data Visualization.

Submissions are due by February 17, 2022, at 6:00 pm. Click here to submit your visualization. The winner will receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card.

The competition rubric and other important details can be found here!

Inspirational Data Sets

Feel free to use one of the data sets below or find your own! Clemson Libraries is currently conducting a trial of a new resource for finding datasets called Data Planet, and this is a great opportunity to check it out!

Don’t be a Data Liar! Using Data Visualization for Good, not for Evil

Speaker: Dr. John Tripp is an Assistant Professor of Management

11:30-1:00 PM in the Scholars' Lab (Cooper 413)

Data visualization is the most powerful tool available to communicate the messages that our data is sending. However, it’s very easy to create visualizations that don’t accurately reflect what our data says – even unintentionally.

In this session, Dr. Tripp will present basic principles of human visual perception that data visualizers can leverage for good or for evil. He will illustrate how “good data” can be manipulated to tell “lies” (even by accident) and will present six “meta-rules” for data visualization that can be used to make sure that we tell data stories that work with human perceptions and don’t lie to our viewers.

By the end of this session, you’ll be able to recognize when a visualization might be lying to you, or when you might have accidentally created a data lie yourself.
