The March Review

Leavers' Dinner

LEAVERS' DINNER | Our Year 13 pupils dressed up for a fantastic celebratory leavers' dinner in Restaurant 1877. Very well done to all those who organised the event and thanks to Mr Tonge and his team for cooking such delicious food – a great time was had by all. We hope that you enjoy perusing the full photo gallery linked below.

World Book Day

WORLD BOOK DAY | At the start of March pupils dressed up as their favourite literary characters for World Book Day - everything from Paddington Bear to Mary Poppins and Gangsta Granny. Thanks to the Year 12 pupils who coordinated the event, which raised £336.00 for Save the Children. Please click the link below to view a full gallery of the character costumes.

As part of our literary celebrations, St Leonards parent and Book Aid International ambassador Dr Alice König kindly recorded an assembly for our Senior pupils. Dr König spoke about the work of Book Aid International, which seeks to give everyone access to books no matter where they are born or how much money they have, and helped the pupils to understand that access to books is an immense privilege. Since 2015 the St Leonards community has raised funds to send 350 books to communities across the world, helping children to gain vital literacy skills. Thanks to Dr König for taking the time to record such an informative, interesting, and inspiring assembly.

Last, but by no means least, pupils and staff shared their favourite reads through displays in classrooms and boarding houses. In light of Dr König's assembly, it was a fantastic way to celebrate the privilege of reading for pleasure.

Time for Tea

TIME FOR TEA | Our outgoing Pupil Leadership Team joined the Head for afternoon tea in the garden this month, by way of thanks to the students for all their hard work over the past year. Everyone enjoyed scones with cream and jam in the spring sunshine!

Multimedia Models

MULTIMEDIA MODELS | This term, the Year 7 pupils have been inquiring into the causes of the First World War and the peacemaking efforts that followed, covering everything from the Arms Race to Empire building, trench conditions, and the battles at the Somme and Verdun. The pupils examined lots of different primary sources including newspaper coverage, photographs, adverts, propaganda, and recruitment campaigns. Inspired by this, the pupils created their own newspaper spreads.

Last, but by no means least, the pupils made model trenches, using different media to create their models, including cardboard, Lego and wafer biscuits. The finished models are fantastic - well done, Year 7!

Art Awards

ART AWARDS | Congratulations to Archie D and Daisy D whose entries to the Royal Scottish Academy's Schools Art Award were highly commended in the Junior Section! There were over 1000 entries to the prestigious competition, which is open to all secondary and special schools in Scotland, with prizes awarded for work which displays creativity, originality and skills of technique and observation.

Daisy Donaldson, Drawing Conclusions, Mixed Media Collage.
Archie Donaldson, Sense of Place, Abstract Painting.

Live from the Auditorium

LIVE FROM THE AUDITORIUM | The St Leonards community has been treated to some fantastic concerts this month, including the Piano Concert, GCSE Concert and Spring Concert. The pupils have loved being able to perform to live audiences again - there has been a real buzz in the Auditorium - we hope that those who have tuned in from home have enjoyed watching! Congratulations to all the performers.

In the spirit of musical congratulations, very well done to the following pupils who received ABRSM qualifications this month:

  • Arabella H - Grade 2 Singing with Merit;
  • Grace H - Grade 3 Singing with Merit;
  • Jamie B - Grade 3 Violin with Merit; and
  • Eva S - Grade 5 Alto Saxophone with Distinction and Grade 6 Singing with Merit.

Redefining Solidarity

REDEFINING SOLIDARITY | This month, 17 pupils took part in the Platon School Athens Online Model United Nations (MUN) conference which, this year, was centred on the theme of 'Redefining Solidarity'. Led by ambassadors Leonard H and Thomas R, the delegates represented Russia and Angola, put forward some excellent resolutions, and engaged in lively debates and discussions. The pupils discussed a wide range of topics - everything from the question of disempowering Boko Haram in West Africa to the issue of cultural relativism and its effects on indigenous people, international maritime laws, managing the threat to global health caused by refusing vaccinations and strategies to assess and counteract the effects of coral bleaching. Special mention to Annika N who held the prestigious position of judge in the International Court of Justice!

Below are some of the delegates' reflections.

"The three-day conference was sensational. At first, I was pretty shy at speaking because I was nervous - I've never done anything like this! What if I do something wrong? What would other people think? But I soon got out of my comfort zone and forgot about all these paranoid thoughts and started to speak more. I even gave a speech addressing sexual violence! It was my first time doing MUN, and so it was a brand new yet fruitful experience." Samuel Z
"On the final day, I gave my opening speech for my resolution and absolutely smashed it. No one voted against or abstained from the resolution. I even won an honourable mention!" Keyuri A
"At first, I wasn't aware of some of the professional vocabulary used in MUN. Over the course of the conference, I started to use these words and became more confident with my speeches." Leonard H

The pupils came up with creative, innovative and relevant solutions and propositions - well done to all.

Ambassador Appointments

AMBASSADOR APPOINTMENTS | For a number of years, Karajahyah S has held the role of Youth Ambassador for the Kingdor National Parkinson's Foundation, working hard to raise awareness and funds for the charity, which is an affiliate chapter of the Parkinson's Foundation in the United States. Earlier this month, together with Senior Deputy Ambassador Julian Z, he conferred the honorary role of Deputy Ambassador upon Keyuri A and Ben S at a pinning ceremony. It is wonderful to see our pupils look outwards, to seek to support those living with this disease and to raise funds for research that aims to help find a cure.

Published Author

PUBLISHED AUTHOR | Congratulations to Keyuri A whose entry to the Young Writers' competition will be published in a compilation of creative writing this year. Based upon the theme of empowerment, her poem, 'Hush' was chosen from over 5000 entries. This marked the ninth creative writing success for Keyuri - a round of applause is certainly due!

Trinity Thespians

TRINITY THESPIANS | Earlier this month, our Trinity candidates performed their examination pieces to live audiences in the School Hall, showcasing their hard work to our school community ahead of the examinations. Pictured below are Paddy P and Raf H rehearsing their excerpt from Richard III, and Will J and Edward C performing a scene from Hamlet.

Since these photographs were taken, we learned that all our Trinity Drama students passed their examinations, with 37 Distinctions and 23 Merits between them. A truly outstanding set of results and performances!

Fieldwork Focus

FIELDWORK FOCUS | As British Science Week got underway, our Year 12 biologists headed to Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae to conduct a number of different fieldwork experiments. Decked out in wellies and waterproofs, the pupils examined freshwater invertebrates, small mammals and marine plants and will now analyse the data collected for their coursework projects. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to consolidate and add depth to their understanding of the ecology and evolution topics.

Tree Planting

TREE PLANTING | To mark Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, people from across the United Kingdom have been invited to plant a tree and play their part in caring for the environment, creating a legacy that will benefit future generations. The St Leonards community is delighted to be participating in this fantastic initiative, and has planted four trees: an apple tree by the gym; a plum tree by the Main School Reception; a pear tree in QML gardens; and a cooking apple tree in front of Ollerenshaw. The trees have been pinned on the Queen's Green Canopy Map and were planted earlier this week by the members of the Tree Planting Committee - Andrew S, Olivia T-S, Caitlin E, Ava N and Tess N - with assistance from Joe and Colin from the grounds team, as well as Mrs Henderson in the Geography Department. We look forward to watching them blossom in the coming months and years!

Play Away

PLAY AWAY | Earlier this month, a group of budding young musicians from St Leonards enjoyed a fantastic day of music making with students from across Scotland at the Scottish Schools Orchestra Trust (SScOT) biannual 'Play Away' day, which was held at the University of St Andrews' state-of-the-art Laidlaw Music Centre. The pupils enjoyed participating in the string orchestra or windband for the first part of the day, and then came together to perform the Star Wars soundtrack as one big orchestra - an amazing experience for all. Last, but by no means least, there was a fun quiz, and some of the St Leonards pupils were part of the winning team! Huge congratulations to all the pupils who demonstrated their risk-taking and communication skills throughout the day.

Delicious Dinner

DELICIOUS DINNER | As part of the BTEC Business Course, the Year 13 Career-related Programme (CP) students organise an event, which forms part of their assessed grade. This is a mammoth task, and so in Year 12, under the guidance of Mrs Prudencio-Aponte, the pupils organise a practise event to hone their event-planning skills. Following in the footsteps of last year's cohort, the students organised a dinner for the Year 13 CP students, Mr Brian, Mrs Pemberton, Mr Seymour and their CP teachers, Mrs White, Ms Sherwood and Mr Funcasta. The dinner was based upon the theme of 'all the holidays we have missed', and featured a delicious menu prepared by Mr Tonge, a series of fun games, and some excellent speeches! It was a great evening, and the Year 12 and Year 13 cohorts enjoyed exchanging their experiences of the CP.

Below are some of their reflections.

"In our event, I loved everything from the meal to the games. My biggest highlight was giving my speech!" Joe D
"It was a big success - the timing of every activity fell into place!" Sienna L
"It really felt like a family event." Vincent B
"The event definitely helped me develop my skills of event management and planning." Max D

Well done to all involved - it was a memorable and successful evening!

International Links

INTERNATIONAL LINKS | At the end of last month, our Year 12 and 13 Spanish students enjoyed an inter-cultural exchange with Yapayu School, Argentina. The students participated in a quiz about Scottish traditions and Argentinian culture, and also took the opportunity to practise their Spanish and English speaking skills. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to put their language skills into practice!

Six Nations

SIX NATIONS | Earlier this month, six St Leonards pupils, along with their teammates from the local club, had a great time at the Women's Six Nations watching Scotland take on England at DAM Health Stadium. The final score was 5-57 to England. It was a wonderful opportunity for the team to see high level rugby live, and the girls were inspired to keep training and improving their games in the coming years. Many thanks to Miss McGregor for organising the trip, and to Mr Suttie for accompanying the group!

Break the Bias

BREAK THE BIAS | At St Leonards, we are committed to helping to create a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination, where difference is valued and celebrated.

To mark International Women’s Day, the St Leonards Association of Girls, together with Ms McQuade-Powell, led a fantastic assembly, and across the campus, pupils and staff crossed their arms to show solidarity with the campaign to break the bias, call out inequality, reject discrimination and smash stereotypes. The group, pictured below, was founded last year by Grace A and seeks to empower girls within our community to stand together and fight for change, and their assembly covered a wealth of topics including the history of the Women's Movement, the role that men can have in advancing inclusion and equality, and the unconscious bias that is embedded within our society. Many thanks to the St Leonards Association of Girls and Ms McQuade-Powell for coordinating a fantastic day of celebrations, and for challenging our community to continue to strive for a world free of bias and discrimination.

Articulate Arguments

ARTICULATE ARGUMENTS | Congratulations to Claudia D, Nathaniel T, Isla B and Isla H who represented St Leonards at the St Andrews Union Debates this month. The pupils presented nuanced, articulate and persuasive arguments on a diverse and complex set of motions: This House believes that the feminist movement should reject the narrative that all bodies are beautiful; This House believes that America should support the full integration of Taiwan into the People’s Republic of China; This House would hold heads of local police forces criminally liable for crimes conducted by their officers; and This House would violate a ceasefire and kill all leaders involved in a war of attrition. All involved showed themselves to be distinguished debaters - special mention to Isla H and Claudia D who finished in tenth place out of over 50 schools from across Scotland and North East England!

Student Perspective

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE | Did you know that we currently have 60 students studying Psychology in the Sixth Form? The subject is one of our most popular choices for Years 12 and 13, with St Leonards boasting one of the largest uptakes in International Baccalaureate CP and DP Psychology in the UK. Lots of our pupils are interested in reading the subject at university, and so Miss Cave invited in two undergraduate students from the University of St Andrews to share their insights and answer the pupils' questions. Thanks so much to Lauren and Aleisha for taking the time to speak with our pupils!

Nearest Neighbours

NEAREST NEIGHBOURS | As part of their GCSE Geography course, our Year 11 pupils recently conducted a 'nearest neighbour' analysis, investigating variations in land use functions in and around the town centre of St Andrews. The pupils completed a variety of activities, such as traffic counts and trundle wheel measurements, and gathered useful data which they then analysed back in the classroom. It was a great opportunity for the pupils to apply the knowledge, skills and understanding that they have acquired over the past two years to a real-life context.

Take a Bow

TAKE A BOW | Last week, Poppy P performed in a new show titled Optimism at the Dundee Rep Theatre. Devised by the cast, the production examined all manner of current issues including climate change, Brexit, the health crisis and more, and was a sell-out success.

Reflecting upon the production, Poppy said:

"Optimism says what a lot of kids are too scared to say. Many adults don't realise that kids do in fact worry about 'grown up' topics, and Optimism gave us an opportunity to express our opinions on how we feel about the world and what we should do to help."

Congratulations to Poppy and the other members of the Rep Young Company!

Pupil-Led Conferences

PUPIL-LED CONFERENCES | This week, our MYP pupils shared their learning with their parents at our series of Pupil-Led Conferences. They have shown themselves to be true IB learners: balanced and reflective communicators and thinkers who take ownership of their inquiries and are committed to making a meaningful difference to their local and global communities.

So Long, Farewell

SO LONG, FAREWELL | The Year 13 Business Management students enjoyed a special farewell lunch with Mrs Prudencio-Aponte this week, complete with delicious homemade Mozza pizza and her famous homemade cheesecake. The class enjoyed reflecting on the past two years of learning, and all agreed that they have acquired so many new skills through the course.

Cake to Celebrate

CAKE TO CELEBRATE | Our Year 13 Career-related Programme students received their BTEC finance exam results earlier this month and, to celebrate, they enjoyed delicious coffee and carrot cake at morning break, joined in the Head’s Study by their teachers. Well done to all - this was the best set of results since the BTEC programme was introduced at St Leonards!

Business Masterclass

BUSINESS MASTERCLASS | Earlier this month, our budding businessmen and women in Years 11 and 12 enjoyed a fantastic masterclass with Claire Reid-Warrilow, Director of Undergraduate Recruitment at Sommet Education UK. She outlined the exciting hospitality management degrees offered at Glion and Les Roches, prestigious and career-focused institutions with campuses across the globe. In previous years, pupils from St Leonards have gone on to study at these universities, and Year 13 CP student and outgoing Head of School Karajahyah S (pictured) will begin his undergraduate degree at Glion next academic year. The pupils were then tasked with preparing a pitch for a new hotel - congratulations to Group 2, whose Parisian hotel inspired by artists came out on top. Thanks again to Claire for taking the time to inspire our pupils!

Catering Team of the Year

CATERING TEAM OF THE YEAR | Freshly-cooked, healthy dishes are served in Restaurant 1877 each day helping to support the mental and physical health of our school community. These delicious dishes and the hard work of our caterers were recognised at the Thomas Franks awards last week – congratulations to Darren and his team who received the Scotland School Team of the Year accolade!

TOK Talks

TOK TALKS | Very well done to the Year 12 pupils who delivered polished presentations at our open-air TOK Exhibitions this month, held in the garden of Queen Mary’s Library. With reference to three objects, the students explored some fascinating lines of inquiry, such as the relationship between knowledge, belief and opinion and the role that imagination plays in producing knowledge about the world.

StAnza at St Leonards

STANZA AT ST LEONARDS | Earlier this month, St Leonards was pleased to host a number of 'Round Table by the Fire' poetry readings as part of StAnza, Scotland's International Poetry Festival. These public events were hosted in our cosy yurts, and featured the poets Hannah Lowe, George Szirtes Jean Sprackland, and Fiona Benson.

Perfect Pancakes

PERFECT PANCAKES | The boarders whipped up some delicious pancakes and crepes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, which they then enjoyed with a plethora of toppings - whipped cream, banana, berries, lemon and sugar and, of course, chocolate spread! Later in the month, the Bishopshall girls took to the kitchen once again to whip up another batch of pancakes... we certainly have some accomplished chefs in our midst!

Muck Up Day

MUCK UP DAY | At the start of this week, our Year 13 pupils celebrated their final few days at school with some good-natured fun, digging out their old school uniforms and other fabulous fancy dress costumes for a water fight, games and more. We hope that our leavers enjoyed their day.

Dinner with the Head

DINNER WITH THE HEAD | This month's Sixth Form supper events with the Head have been a roaring success, complete with delicious food and stimulating conversation. These supper parties marked the start of a series of invitations for our older boarders to enjoy dinner and dialogue at the Head's House. Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Brian for hosting!

Abilities and Opportunities

ABILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES | As part of their inquiry into abilities and opportunities, the Year 9 English B pupils visited Verdant Works, Dundee, a restored jute mill museum which allows visitors to learn more about the city's industrial past. It was a wonderful trip, and the pupils loved immersing themselves in the historical artefacts and learning more about the history of the local area.

Luxury Events

LUXURY EVENTS | As part of their Business BTEC, the CP students must organise an event, and to help them prepare for this exciting project, we were delighted to virtually welcome Mr Richard Laing of Laings Jewellers to deliver a presentation on events planning in the luxury sector. He spoke about the importance of problem-solving, design and organisation, and also encouraged the pupils to "never be afraid to dream big." It was a fantastic talk - thank you so much to Mr Laing for taking the time to inspire our pupils!

Below are some of their reflections.

"My favourite part of his talk was when he discussed how his company builds a connection with their clients, which will often last for generations." Joe G
"For me, the part of the talk which really stuck with me was when Mr Laing described the moment that he decided to go into the business. It made me think about how I should try to do something in the future that really motivates me and that I am passionate about... I already have something in mind!" Max D
"The talk helped us to understand the different parts of the family business and how they all work together to make a successful event - we will use this model when planning our next event." Sienna L
"The talk addressed the challenges of coordinating events across different countries, and how every event is different - they even change the guest list for each event so that it feels more inclusive for the people invited." Vincent B

Wonderful Weekends

WONDERFUL WEEKENDS | This month, the boarders' weekends have been the perfect mixture of relaxation and adventure. The pupils have taken to the kitchen to make delicious brownies and cakes, soaked up the Spring sunshine with al fresco breakfasts, gone up town to watch new release films at the New Picture House, enjoyed evening ice creams at Jannettas, visited a local trampolining park, watched the Six Nations games, and channelled their creative juices into some abstract art. Later in the month, the boarders enjoyed competitive games of football, badminton and British Bulldogs, head out for an F1 experience day, and gathered around the fire pit for a mellow evening of chat and delicious toasted marshmallows. What a wonderful month!
