The majority of cities along the Sunshine Coast began as small ports of call or as jetties to support the timber industry in the 1870s and the 1860s as the area once had stunning forests. Also, the road network in the region often began as snigging tracks to haul timber. Timber gatherers made use of the region's lakes, creeks as well as rivers and lakes to flot across their cedar-based logs with the wood transported as far as Europe.
In the Gympie Gold Rush (1867), prospectors scaled Gympie's Sunshine Coast mountains to develop easier roadways to and from the goldfields of Gympie. After the building of the railway line that connected Gympie to Gympie the towns along the coast and the river, being mostly ports of the early river trade, were bypassed.
In the 1890s, many small-scale farming (fruit as well as dairy) had replaced the cattle-and-timber economy of earlier years. It was evident that pineapples and sugar canes were especially valuable to supply the district. Numerous small towns and hamlets are now emerging. Produce was first transported by horses to Landsborough, then to Eudlo in 1891.
The Shire of Noosa was re-established on 1 January 2014. The result was two geopolitical areas that are located in the region commonly referred to as 'The Sunshine Coast'. In the Sunshine Coast Region is governed by the Sunshine Coast Council, and the Shire of Noosa, is controlled by the Noosa Shire Council.
