AMR DetecTool Communications and Social Media Toolkit

Bacteria resistant to medication are spreading across the world.

It is a global health concern and an increasingly serious challenge. If no actions are taken against the growth and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), it’s going to be more and more difficult to treat many common bacterial infections, and simple surgery can also become risky if the antibiotics become less effective.

Rapid AMR detection is essential to give patients effective treatment in time and prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance.

The AMR DetecTool device can detect the most common resistance mechanisms of bacteria directly from the patient’s sample.

It is our responsibility to take action at the social and individual level.

Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance threatens the effective prevention and treatment of the constantly increasing range of infections caused by bacteria.

The spreading of bacteria resistant to antibiotics is a growing threat to public health, leading to 426,000 hospital-contracted infections and 33,000 deaths per year in Europe at present.

There is a lack of rapid tests that could identify the type(s) of resistant bacteria within a short time frame.

There is a lack of standardised strategies for developing efficient diagnosis pathways to tackle antimicrobial resistance in bacteria.

Without effective antibiotics, the success of major surgery and cancer chemotherapy would be compromised.

The cost of health care for patients with resistant infections is higher than care for patients with non-resistant infections due to longer duration of illness, additional tests and use of more expensive drugs.

In 2016, 490 000 people developed multidrug-resistant tuberculosis globally, and drug resistance is starting to complicate the fight against HIV and malaria, as well.

Antimicrobial resistance is an increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society.

AMR DetecTool

A breakthrough device for the rapid detection of antimicrobial resistance

AMR DetecTool is a breakthrough device for the rapid detection of antimicrobial resistance.

AMR DetecTool is a project funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology for the period 2020-2022.

The AMR DetecTool project is an innovation process involving 14 leading organisations from across Europe.

The AMR DetecTool’s goal is to test and bring to market a rapid 30 minutes test of antimicrobial resistance.

The AMR DetecTool project evaluates and brings to market a new set of tests that ensure a quick response time in hospitals for identifying the best antibiotics for patients.

The AMR DetecTool device is ultimately to support hospitals in saving patient lives and saving treatment costs.

Our current AMR DetecTool project is based on an initial solution which was provided through an innovation that directly detected β-lactamases in clinical samples in under 30 minutes, successfully validated during a 1-year EIT Health project in 2018 —BL DetecTool—, by the collaborative work of clinics, hospitals, universities, research institutes and a business partner.

This team has already fulfilled an important mission in 2018. The same project team now is joining forces again to:

  1. expand the domain of the detection;
  2. evaluate the impact of this tool on diagnosis pathways and cost savings; and
  3. develop an AMR Knowledge Portal to support hospitals with their AMR strategy.
