Rylstone Review Term 1 Week 6, 3rd March 2022

From the Principal’s desk

COVID

COVID is still present in our wider school community. All students were given 8 RAT kits on Friday. Please use these whenever you feel necessary or for peace of mind. We still urge you to test your children if they are exhibiting symptoms or have been a close contact. You still must contact the school if there is a COVID positive case in your household. Please remember if a child is presenting as unwell, we will ask you to come and collect them. COVID has not gone away and is still an everyday possibility. Working together we will help keep our school as COVID free as possible and keep everyone safe.

Rylstone Show

Everyone seems to have had an awesome time at the Rylstone / Kandos Show over the weekend!

Fireworks from the Rylstone Show

Every student had art entered into the children’s art section and there were some very happy winners on Monday morning! The theme was Flora and Fauna and the artwork was amazing.

Proud recipients of Show Art awards

An enormous thank you to Alisa Burlington who organised the whole event and made sure that portion of the Show was possible!

School Photos

School photos will be going ahead on Tuesday 22nd March. Please wear full school SUMMER uniform.

Life Education

After much uncertainty, we managed to have our old friend Healthy Harold come to visit! He was not allowed to be in his van but his helper, Maree, ran our Life Ed lessons in the hall. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed learning about our body and staying safe and healthy. Due to the short notice, the school has absorbed the cost for every child to attend.

School Assembly

At last we are able to invite parents back onto our school grounds. At the time of writing this, there are still COVID cases attached to families at our school (not anyone attending our school) and other schools in our immediate vicinity. The staff have decided to take a gradual and moderated approach to having parents here.

This Friday, parents of students in Years 5&6 can attend assembly. Mask wearing onsite is still mandated until the 7th March, so anyone choosing to attend will still have to wear a mask.

Assembly will start at 2:50pm. There will be no zoom for this week’s assembly as I will be off site.

Next week (Friday 11th March ) parents of students in Years 3&4 can attend and the week of 18th March parents of children in K-1-2 can attend. Hopefully by Friday 25th March all parents wishing to attend will be able to.

Please note that parent access to the classroom block is not permitted. If you are collecting your child early please wait outside, near the front of the school while the office staff collect your child for you.

Parent - teacher meetings

COVID pending, we will be having our Parent Teacher meetings for the first time in a couple of years! Information will be sent home shortly and meetings will be held in weeks 10 and 11 this term. This is an opportunity for you to have a one on one discussion with your child’s teacher about their learning and growth. Bookings will be made via the Sentral Portal which will open in Week 8.

Cohorting

Now cohorting restrictions have been lifted, there is a lot of movement of students between classes and grades. Although some grades have been split to allow for class structures, twice-a-week students go back to their grade cohort to participate in History and Science lessons. This ensures students are studying stage specific topics and getting to spend time with friends who may be in different classes.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email jodee.burcher@det.nsw.edu.au

Around the Classrooms

Pacific Ocean with Mrs Rankin & Mrs Fielder

Over the last fortnight, we have been learning so much and having loads of fun.

We completed our INCREDIBLE art for the show, which we are very proud of. We have been learning to sound out our letters and make words in Kindy. The 1 and 2’s have been learning about digraphs and our blue spelling rule.

In Maths we have been working on addition, subtraction and whole number. We are having fun doing our maths rotations where we get lots of time to learn while using manipulatives and technology.

We had such fun today meeting Healthy Harold although he was not in his van. We learnt a lot about healthy eating and having healthy lunch boxes.

We have been enjoying our History stage groups and started our Science stage groups this week too! We have also started learning coding and following instruction with Mrs Newham. We are becoming astounding listeners.

It has been another tremendous week in the Pacific Ocean.

Atlantic Ocean with Ms Burcher & Ms Jacklin

Learning activities in Atlantic Ocean

Indian Ocean with Mrs Mulvaney

Over the last fortnight, we have been swimming along.

We completed AMAZING art for the show, have been working on a writing task to research a significant First Nations person and their achievements and have started something called paired reading where we build on our vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

Some of our amazing Show art

In Maths we have been working on addition, subtraction and multiplication.

We have been enjoying our History stage groups and started our Science stage groups this week too!

Visitors

All visitors to the school are required to present at the school's office. Please sign in if you are staying onsite using the QR code or can use the webform on the iPad if you do not have your phone. The QR code is no longer doubling as a COVID check in but is purely our visitor sign in. Please note that this is used for emergency evacuations so remembering to check out when you leave is very important.

Attendance

We would like to remind parents and carers of their obligation under the Department’s Attendance Policy, to provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record. Extended leave for family holidays during school term will require written permission for leave from the Principal. Further information on school attendance can be found here.

Notifying the school of an absence can be done via the Parent Portal on the Sentral App or a written note to the class teacher.

Attendance matters!

Sentral

Parents who are new to our school will soon receive an email and / or letter explaining the role of the Sentral app in our school. This letter will also contain your Family Key which, after registering, will link you to your children. Please contact the school if you are having difficulties in setting up your access. Sentral has provided some great information on Getting Started with the Sentral for Parents App.

Note: When the school uses the Messages service part of the App, the message will have a random phone number as paying for a dedicate line is a substantial annual cost. We will preface our messages with "Rylstone Public School" or "Rylstone PS" so you can be sure the message is from us.

Home Time Routine

Please establish a normal home time routine eg. walking, bus etc and then if there are any changes to this please notify the school as soon as possible; a note to your class teacher is preferred if you have enough notice. For last minute changes please phone the office on 6379 1404 so the change can be added to our Home/Bus book. Dojo is not to be used to relay these important messages as they could be overlooked. Nor do we rely on students notifying us of changes so please make sure you contact the school as mentioned.

Book Club

Book Club brochures went home this week and are due back on Tuesday 15th March. We are trying to reduce the amount of cash handling for staff so our preferred method of payment is via the Scholastic LOOP portal. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Dates for your calendar

  • Please check your child's attendance on the Sentral app and keep up to date with absence explanations
  • School Drive Subsidy and bus transport: Please keep your details current and notify the Dept. of Transport of any address changes at www.transportnsw.info/school-students

Students who need a School travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Terms of Use

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

P&C News

AGM

The P and C will be holding our Annual General meeting on Tuesday 22nd March and this will be followed by our regular general meeting. All positions will be declared open and nominations will be called for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Fund Raising Officer and Uniform Shop Manager.

The P and C operate a number of regular services such as the Canteen and Uniform Shop, but also raise money through other activities such as the Zone Cross Country Canteen and StreetFeast. These events are a great way to meet other families and help raise funds towards your children’s education and extracurricular activities such as excursions. I would encourage anyone who is interested to come along and find out how you can get involved!

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop is open every Friday from 9am – 9.30am. Uniform purchases can also be made online at https://rylstone-public-school-parents-and-citizens-association.square.site/ and these orders are sent home with your child on Fridays.

Next Meeting (AGM)

  • Date: Tuesday 22nd March 2022
  • Time: 3.30pm

All welcome!
