Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

principal's message

NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and 5 students received their NAPLAN results yesterday, and I must congratulate our students on their wonderful success. We have demonstrated increased results in reading, writing and mathematics in both Year 3 and Year 5, with over 62% of our students in the top two bands in reading, and more than 44% of our students in the top two bands in numeracy. Additionally, we have met our Premier’s Priority school improvement measure (percentage of students in top two bands) in numeracy and are nearly there in reading as well. This has been a mighty feat given everything that has gone on in the world over the past two years.

I would like to thank my executive and teaching staff for their dedication to ensuring that our students are receiving the highest quality instruction, based on research into best practice and effective pedagogy. As a school, we have had a determined and sustained focus on improving student outcomes in literacy and numeracy through teacher Professional Learning for the last couple of years, in line with our School Improvement Plan targets and improvement measures. Together with our implementation of Visible Learning strategies, we are confident that we will continue to see these amazing, and even better results in all learning areas. I remain ever proud of my students and staff, as we strive to ensure our children are engaged and motivated in their own learning.

Kiss n Ride

Please ensure that after you drop your kids off, or pick them up at Kiss n Ride, that you drive safely around the small showground, and when passing by the large showground, remembering it is a 10km speed limit around these roads. I recently have had some community complaints about how fast and carelessly cars are travelling after the Kiss n Ride drop off/pick up spot, with one community member informing me that she was going to call the police out. Please be mindful that these are not public roads, but are shared community spaces, and that there are children, older residents, and lots of dogs around. I thank you for always driving carefully and considerately around this area.

Colour Run

Our colour run was such a fantastic event, and I am pleased to say that our students raised over $15000! Well done to our wonderful community for supporting us in our endeavours to raise funds towards our new playground. What a spectacular effort. I hope that the students had as much fun as the staff (including myself) did!

School Musical

Thank you to all of you who have so far purchased tickets to our matinee or evening performance. Our evening ticket allocation is getting close to being exhausted. However, there are many tickets still available for our matinee session. This would be a great session to perhaps invite grandparents who no longer work along to, or to bring younger siblings along to. The sale of these tickets will just cover the costs involved with running the musical (no profit), so please continue to support our students so that we can continue to put on these fabulous events in future. It is such a memorable experience for our students.

Billy Cart Derby

Please consider supporting our P&C fundraising efforts at our Billy Cart Derby. It is their first major fundraiser in several years. This year the pit stop stalls will be held at the bottom of the hill on Bryon Street, right in front of the school fence. You can help by volunteering to man stalls for an hour or two on the day, selling lots of raffle tickets, and coming along on the day (Sunday 18th September) for a fun family day out. While you’re at it, consider building a billy cart with your children and entering one of the races. You can register here .

Learner Disposition Launch: Perseverant

Next week we are launching our fourth learner disposition, Way of Achieving: Perseverant. I believe there are a number of exciting challenges which students will take part in, including a team inflatable obstacle course challenge! What a way to explore what it means to be perseverant in learning and life!

Public Service Association (PSA) Schools Recognition Week

Next week is PSA Schools Recognition week, when we acknowledge the vital contribution of our school support staff to our school community. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated support staff at Bangalow Public School, who always work tirelessly to ensure that the school runs smoothly, that teachers are supported and that our students are at the forefront of everything we do. Their contributions enable our teaching staff to focus on teaching, rather than administrative tasks.

Our wonderful School Administrative and Support staff includes Juliette Sizer, Andrea Steenson, Joelle Baker, Mark Thomson, Sarah Vaughan, Natalie Strain, Dee Cook, Mauzie Breslin, Lou Grofski and Kerri Vagg. On behalf of the school community, I would like to thank each of my SAS staff for their dedication and hard work in ensuring that Bangalow Public School is the amazing place it is. Please feel free to drop in and let the SAS staff know how much you value their contribution next week.

Father’s and Special Other’s Day

And finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our fathers a very happy Father’s Day. I extend this wish to all those men who play a special or fatherly role in someone’s life. I hope that you enjoy the gifts that your children bring home from our father’s and special other’s stall (thank you Reverend Phil). We look forward to welcoming our dads and significant other males into school tomorrow morning at 8:30am for a donut and a fun activity with your child(ren).

Have a wonderful week.

class of the week - ngumahl (3/4M)

In Ngumahl we love to throw ourselves into our learning. The world is our classroom, so we use our school grounds to get hands-on learning and our local community, like the Men’s Shed to connect to our world. We are not afraid to get our hands dirty, so when we explore our natural world we allow a few explosions, a bit of mud and mess. When we write poetry, we immerse ourselves in our environment and use all our senses. And when it’s Book Week we really dress up!

enrolments

Kindergarten enrolments are well under way for next year. Kindy Orientation will commence early in Term 4. Please remember that in order for students to attend Kindy O, they must be enrolled (due to Duty of Care regulations). We are very much looking forward to welcoming our new Kindergarten students into our wonderful community.

If you have a child and are yet to enrol in Kindy for next year, please contact the school via phone or email to begin your Kindergarten enrolment process, or you can ENROL ONLINE. Similarly, if you know of any local families who may be looking to enrol, please encourage them to do so. In this way we can inform them of information sessions and transition dates.

As the year quickly draws near to end, we ask you to please inform the school as soon as possible if you know that your child will not be at Bangalow PS next year. We rely on accurate enrolment information to form the basis of our staffing and class organisation. We appreciate your help in this matter.

We invite all our dads and significant male carers to join us tomorrow Friday 2nd September at 8:30am for a chance to complete an activity with your child(ren) in their classroom before school commences. colour run

Bangalow Public School had our very first Colour Run and it was a HUGE success! The students and staff had a fun filled afternoon with lots of laughter and colourful smiles. The total money raised was $15,319.54 an outstanding effort by all BPS students. Thank you! Congratulations to Yumbar (3/4W) on achieving the highest amount raised as a class. They will enjoy their pizza party later this term. A special thanks need to go to Mrs Gisen, Ms Melville, Mrs Sharp, Miss Jameson, Mrs Cross and the Office Ladies for all the time and effort organising the afternoon.

Multicultural Public Speaking

Congratulations to Andy F of Stage 3 who competed in the regional final of the Multicultural Public Speaking competition in Grafton on Monday. Andy delivered his prepared speech and also an impromptu speech entitled ‘Keeping Secrets’. When giving an impromptu speech, children are given only five minutes preparation time and are required to speak between one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half minutes. The competition was fierce and while Andy has not progressed to the next round, he was congratulated by the adjudicator for having the best prepared speech of the day. We are so proud of Andy and his achievements. Congratulations!

debating

Yesterday, Bangalow Public School hosted the second Debating Gala Day for the two Bangalow teams as well as Eureka, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads teams. It was a very busy day with six debates throughout the day.

Bangalow Gold were fabulous and had two very hard-fought debates. The first debate was a close one against the Byron Bay Blue team. The topic was ‘that schools should teach Year 5 and 6 students life skills like cooking, sewing, cleaning and how to fix things’. They had excellent arguments and were unlucky not to win. Their second debate was against Byron Bay Red team and this time they were the winners. The topic was ‘that primary schools should set aside 30 minutes every day for sport and exercise’.

Bangalow Green had another great day, winning both their debates. This leaves them undefeated in this local round of the competition and they are now the Zone Champions! They debated against Brunswick Heads with the topic ‘that every school kid should have to play in a weekend team sport competition’. Their other debate was against Byron Bay Red team with the topic ‘that parents should have their Year 6 children babysit younger siblings’. Bangalow Green will now compete against Alstonville in the coming weeks as part of the regional knockout finals.

All the arguments and rebuttals during the day were clear and well thought out. We are very proud of all the students in our debating teams.

school visitor check-in

Every visitor to our school site needs to check in at the school office - this is NSW Department of Education policy.  This used to be in the form of a paper sign-on book, however all schools have now moved to a digital sign-in procedure, using a QR code.

Many parents and carers are familiar with the process of using their phone to scan our school’s QR code and sign-in as a visitor but what happens if you forget your phone? We’ve got you covered. Our new School Visitor Check-in concierge iPad device and app is designed to help you check-in and check-out in mere moments! You can continue to check-in with your phone, but if you need an alternative, please use the concierge device at front reception.

Sending an absence notification to school?

When your child is absent from school, please advise us of the reason as soon as possible. You can do this with a simple phone call to the office, or by completing an Absentee Form in the School Stream app. If you are reporting the absence electronically, or responding to our automated SMS (which is sent out at 11am each day to parents of students who are absent without an explanation), please be sure to leave a detailed reason. If your child is unwell, please provide some further information so we don' t have to follow up with another phone call (e.g. "cold/flu", "headache", "tummy bug", etc).
