NILBRASKa

In June 2021, Nebraska Athletics introduced #NILbraska, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln initiative to educate student-athletes on branding, marketing and financial literacy, among other aspects. #NILbraska prepares student-athletes to take advantage of recent Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rule changes. The new initiative is yet another example of Nebraska leading the nation.

See the complete breakdown of NILbraska below.

ready now

In March 2020, Nebraska became the first school in the country to partner with Opendorse, giving birth to the Ready Now program, designed to help student-athletes build their individual brands.

Founded by Nebraska Football alumni Blake Lawrence and Adi Kunalic, Opendorse has become the market leader in helping athletes maximize the value of their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). More than 60,000 athletes currently use Opendorse, and Opendorse has partnered with the NFLPA, PGA Tour, MLBPA and others while brands like Pepsi, Procter & Gamble and EA Sports also use the platform.

With Opendorse, Husker student-athletes in every sport have access to the same NIL readiness education, social media assessments, and content sharing tools available to the pros.

accelerate

The Accelerate component of the #NILbraska program will focus on teaching student-athletes how to build a business around themselves, with student-athletes receiving instruction on how to identify, strengthen and activate their NIL potential.

The Accelerate program will incorporate pop-up classes in various colleges at the University of Nebraska open to all students, focusing on entrepreneurship and skills to build brands and businesses. The College of Journalism and Mass Communications, College of Business, and the College of Law currently offer courses, as well as upcoming 8-week courses presented by Hudl and Opendorse.

"The goal was to create a program that sets a standard by leaning into Nebraska Athletics rich history of innovation," said Joe Petsick, Assistant Professor of Practice in Management in the UNL College of Business. "With Accelerate, we set out to create a program that was not just focused on how to help the student-athletes make money, but also how they can use tools to build a business around themselves."

For more information on the courses offered, student-athletes can contact their academic advisor.

husker advantage

Spearheaded by Nebraska's nationally acclaimed Life Skills program, the third aspect of #NILbraska is the Husker Advantage. Established around mentoring, Husker Advantage will focus on several areas critical to maximizing NIL potential, including a Personal Strengths Assessment, Brand Building + Brand Value Assessment, Communications + Networking and Financial Literacy + Compliance.
