Jubilee Celebration

We had a great few days at the end of last term creating some fantastic art pieces all linked to The Queens Platinum Jubilee.

Here are a few pictures from the event.

A fantastic painting by Rayan in Year 3

Mufti Day

Some of you may know about our reading dog Dudley who has been visiting our school since 2019. Sadly during the May half term Dudley's owner Bryan passed away after a short illness.

Bryan was a well loved member of the Cedar Road family and bought so much joy to the children and staff that were lucky enough to meet him.

As soon as Bryan fell ill he made sure the first thing he did was to organise for his lovely wife Tricia to take over reading duties, so that Cedar Road and Dudley would not miss out. This says so much about the type of person Bryan was.

In the last few weeks of his life, Bryan was cared for at Cynthia Spencer Hospice, and therefore we would like to give back to them.

On Monday 20th June 2022 we will hold a whole school mufti day with a suggested donation of £1. All money raised will be donated to the hospice to help continue the fantastic work they do.

Gambia Fundraiser

Today we had a fantastic time completing our fundraiser assault course. The children made their way around a great course and experimented with different ways to move their bodies. The children were brilliant!

We worked closely with the Northampton Trustee Fund to arrange this fundraiser to raise money to support the villagers of Penyem. They have helped to improve the education and health of the villagers and have improved their water systems, making it safe for the villagers.

This year we are raising money to buy sports equipment for the schools and most importantly for mosquito nets to help the people stay safe.

We can't wait to see our final total. Thank you for your support.

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye

On the 20th June we say goodbye to Miss Phillips, who is leaving Cedar Road to start her dream job as a Teaching Assistant within another local school. Miss Phillips has worked in the school office for 7 years, and before this was a volunteer at the school. I remember Miss Phillips when she was a College student and was on a placement when I taught in Reception. I think you will all agree that Miss Phillips will be sadly missed, but we all wish her the very best for her new position.

We will also be saying goodbye to Mr. Flaxman on the 20th June. Mr. Flaxman has been a 1:1 Ta at Cedar Road for the last few years. We wish him well with his next adventure.

At the end of this academic year, we will also be saying goodbye and good luck to Mr. Luu, who will start a new position as PE teacher in a Primary School. Mr. Luu has a passion for sport and we know he will do well in this role. Miss Clarke will also be leaving at the end of the academic year and we wish her well in her future endeavors.

Cedar Road Reading Corner

Welcome back to The Cedar Road Reading Corner. Did you know that Wednesday 8th June marked World Ocean Day? With that in mind, this week we have some aquatic adventures for you to try.

For Key stage 1 we love the sound of National Trust: The Wide, Wide Sea by Anna Wilson

A lyrical and inspirational picture book about protecting nature from plastic pollution. When a young child forges a special connection with a seal on a trip to the seaside, their imagination takes them on an unforgettable journey. Through their eyes, we have a chance to explore everything the amazing beach and wide, wide sea has to offer . . . until suddenly a violent storm blows in. The next morning the beach is ugly . . . and covered in litter. Whose fault is it? And who can fix it? Together, the child, their grandmother, and the rest of the community clean the beach, and the child makes a promise to the seal that things will change for the better

For Key Stage 2 we are excited to read The Boy Who Met a Whale by Nizrana Farook

From the author of The Girl Who Stole an Elephant comes another brilliant escapade. A thrilling adventure set in fictional Sri Lanka, jam-packed with peril and kidnap and a huge blue whale! Razi, a local fisherboy, is watching turtle eggs hatch when he sees a boat bobbing into view. With a chill, he notices a small, still hand hanging over the side... Inside is Zheng, who's escaped a shipwreck and is full of tales of sea monsters and missing treasure. But the villains who are after Zheng are soon after Razi and his sister, Shifa, too. And so begins an exhilarating adventure in the shadow of the biggest sea monster of them all...

Lastly for the adults we recommend The Dragonfly Sea by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor

On an island in the Lamu Archipelago lives a solitary, stubborn child called Ayaana and her mother, Munira. When a sailor, Muhidin, enters their lives, the child finds something she has never had before: a father. But as Ayaana grows into adulthood, forces of nature and history begin to reshape her life, leading her to distant countries and fraught choices. Selected as a descendant of long-ago Chinese shipwrecked sailors Ayaana is sent to study in China. Leaving her resourceful single mother, she is forced to grow up fast.

Whether it's the scarred captain of the Chinese shipping container that transports Ayaana or the son of Turkish shipping magnate who trades in refugees, Owuor never loses a profound sense of empathy for her characters. She evokes a fascinating kind of beauty in this dangerous, chaotic world and its ever-shifting oceans and trade.

Told with a glorious lyricism, The Dragonfly Sea is a transcendent story of love and adventure, and of the inexorable need for shelter in a dangerous world.

We hope you all enjoyed reading your Jubilee book!
