Our Intent at Swinton Queen

Geography is vital to a rich and broad primary education. At Swinton Queen Primary, we want children to enjoy learning about places - those in their own locality and those further afield.

We use the National curriculum to identify the key knowledge and skills required to be successful in geography. Teaching should encourage curiosity and ensure pupils have a good knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

Our children work to achieve the National Curriculum aims, which includes to:

Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.

Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.

Collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes

Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.

At Swinton Queen, we have developed a curriculum which focuses on the progression of skills and knowledge outlined in the National Curriculum. This is encompassed by our Curriculum Concepts for Geography:

These key concepts form building blocks of progress in terms of knowledge, skills and understanding as the children progress through school. When a new unit of work is introduced, links are made to prior learning within the concept, together with what learning will come in the next phases, so the children are clear how what they have been taught before, can be used to support their new learning, and how this will feed into subsequent learning.

We ensure that previously taught concepts are regularly revisited. All pupils have full access to the Geography curriculum with individual or group support to enable them to secure their knowledge to access the content.

We ensure pupils experience many educational visits to ensure rich first hand experiences. For example: Studies of the local area - settlement development, links with other places; comparing places further afield with Swinton - Whitby and Filey. Where possible we have underpinned our learning in Geography with the study of other Curriculum areas.
