The Road to Hana A survivor's tale from Maui, Hawaii

There exists a road on the Hawaiian Island of Maui carved out of the volcanic cliffs that is so twisty, so curve, so dangerous, that it has a posted speed limit of 10 miles an hour over its 30 mile length. 600 turns! One way bridges! Lots of tourists who don't know how to drive! Crazy locals barreling down the road on a beer run!

It's called the Hana Highway but its like no other highway you've ever experienced. 600 turns and 54 (mostly) one-lane bridges, and no shoulder! The Road to Hana is the crown-jewel of Hawaii driving tours. Lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools but there is a catch. It's a slow, careful, drive with so many wondrous sites you could get lost on it for days.

  • Tip: Gas up before you start out - one gas station past Paia on this road, and that is in Hana Town and its going to be expensive.
  • Tip: Get your last minute snacks and drinks in Paia before you start out. There might be a farm stand open on the route but than again there might not be.
  • Tip: Convertibles are fine but be prepared for some rain, it is a rain forest after all.
  • Tip: Watch your time. In the winter when days are short, you don't want to be caught driving on this road after dark.
  • Tip: Most people make it to Hana and then drive back the way they came. The other end has a harrowing cliff road with blind turns and gravel roads! Not for the faint of heart. Most rental car companies tell you not to go there.
  • Tip: Consider staying overnight Hana. There is so much to see along the road, you might as well enjoy it.
