how do we remember? EXPLORING MEMORY

Found in Translation

The root ז.כ.ר is at the heart of the word zikaron. These three letters embody our needs of collective remembrance (zecher), a reminder resurfacing from the past (tizkoret), and what we take with us into the future (mazkeret).

Meir Shalev said, “everyone has a treasury of memory within them.”

1. What aspects of zikaron emerge from the poems?

2. What makes our memories personal? Collective?

3. What do we choose to remember? How do our memories shape our present?
