- First, we had the long-awaited return and performance of the legendary Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán for their “México Creo en Ti.” This was the final event in the two-day 6th International Mariachi Festival at TAMIU, which attracted over 450 high school mariachi students from across Texas here. Also gracing the stage Friday and Saturday were TAMIU dance students presenting their Spring Dance Concerts with a full spectrum of dance: folklorico, jazz and modern. Congratulations to all for a remarkable weekend brilliantly celebrating the arts.

TAMIU Celebrates Earth Day with New Bike Repair Station
As part of a day-long observation of Earth Day, TAMIU held a dedication ceremony of a new Dustdevil Bike Repair Station. The station is designed to help provide a safe and enjoyable biking experience on campus, and encourages students and staff to use bikes as a means of transportation. TAMIU Border Lit to Deliver 100 Student-Authored Books to TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership Wednesday
This Wednesday, April 27 a group of TAMIU students will deliver 100 gift children’s books they’ve authored that are ready to be opened by students of the TAMIU-Lamar Bruni Vergara Literacy Partnership. The books will be presented to representatives of the Literacy Partnership in ceremonies at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library at 11 a.m. The book authors are members of TAMIU Border Lit, a group comprised of current students and alumni of the College of Arts and Sciences’ Multicultural Children’s Literature course promoting representation of border communities in children’s literature.
"Students enrolled in the Multicultural Children’s Literature course for Fall and Spring semesters each wrote a children’s book to support early literacy acquisition in the Laredo community. These 100 books will be donated to the TAMIU-LBV Literacy Partnership. Partnership tutors will use them to tutor students in the community. They largely focus on border culture, diversity and inclusion, and family and identity. Together, we want to encourage literacy in young readers by increasing access to children’s works that authentically represent the Laredo community,”
- Dr. Kaitlyn Culliton, assistant professor of English
