ISSUE 3 - May 2022

Dear parents,

Welcome to our third edition of our COAST magazine. It is timely that as we approach the celebrations next week with the Queens Platinum Jubilee we also dedicate this edition to celebrate the success of our students. We have pursued an active increase in school experiences outside of the classroom including school trips from Hengistbury Head to Kidzania, London and planned trips abroad including Paris. We have also seen a significant increase in competition participation and are pleased to see our trophy cabinet increasing in weight! Most important are the individual students who either as part of a team or through individual endeavour, have gained recognition in the following pages. I hope that you are able to celebrate their success with either your own child mentioned or another that you may know. Successes range from the “Top 10” in each year group, to those that have maintained 100% attendance, gained a position in the new Student Leadership Team or gained the most reward points. Not to forget those students who aim to combine their studies with their passion for an external sport or activity such as Caitlyn Johnson. Caitlyn managed to sit her GCSE exams, fly to Portugal, win gold in the Portimao boxing cup, then return a day early to ensure she was ready for her final RS GCSE exam. What an achievement!

I hope you are all able to relax next week and celebrate what looks to be an eventful week.

Best wishes

Mr Brown, Principal

Sholing students have Big Ideas!

Students in Year 8 have been taking part in the Big Ideas project. This is a national wide STEM and/or sustainability programme allowing students to learn about the sustainability of products in their everyday lives and then develop their own unique projects solving some of the most issues challenging our community today.

Two teams from Oasis Sholing, reached the Regional South of England Finals on the 9th May. Here are their stories from the day.

TEAM G.R.O.W.T.H

The regional finals was very exciting! Firstly, we travelled to the University of Portsmouth on the school’s mini bus and when we got there, we were accompanied to a lecture room by a university ambassador. Then, we watched 3 groups tell us their ideas (including C.A.L.M) and had a little break. Afterwards, a further 3 groups went. For lunch, we sat outside on the steps of the Guildhall and started preparing ourselves for our presentation. One final group gave their presentation, then it was finally our turn! We were very nervous but we managed to get through it very well with excellent comments from the judges! While the judges were deciding the winners, the university ambassadors gave us a tour of the uni and finally, we were told the winners. When we heard it was us, we were so excited that we could barely contain our excitement. It was an amazing experience and we are all so thankful that we were able to experience this

TEAM C.A.L.M

Hello, we are students from Year 8 and recently participated in the Solutions For The Planet’s Big Ideas regional final at Portsmouth University. Our group is called C.A.L.M and we are trying to help the planet by collecting old teddies, washing them and reselling them to avoid too many teddies ending up in landfill. Unfortunately, we were not able to placed top 3, but we are hoping to be wild carded into the national final in the Palace Of Westminster in London.

An excellent well done to both teams. Team G.R.O.W.T.H. are now through to the National Finals being held in June at the Palace of Westminster.

The Mayor of Southampton meets the Academy Student Parliment

We were thrilled to host the last official visit from the Mayor, Alex Houghton before the new 800th Mayor is inaugurated on Wednesday 18th May at the Mayor Making Ceremony in the Guildhall. The Mayor was invited to talk to the Academy Student Parliament as part of a series of external lectures. This was also a special occasion for the academy as the Mayor met our new Head Boy and Head Girl as well as Principal, Martin Brown who were only informed yesterday of their success. Well done Beatrix Balasiou, Head Girl and Daniel King, Head Boy. We really appreciated the visit in a very busy schedule.

St Giles Trust

On Tuesday 10th May, we welcomed Saeed and Troy from St Giles Trust. Saeed and Troy delivered a series of assemblies throughout the day including to our onsite inclusion provision. These were difficult messages to be delivered especially on County Lines and drug use linked to criminal activity and violence. Both Saeed and Troy were perfect with their life changing stories and delivered their assemblies with an absolute clarity which had all students in each assembly absolutely focussed on their message. It has been a long time since I have seen such a delivery by an external organisation and we were privileged to host their visit. I know the student feedback will be extremely positive and Saeed and Troy with their positive mannerisms and approachability are a real asset to your organisation.

Caitlyn wins gold!

Year 11 student Caitlyn Johnson went to Portugal to complete in the Portimao boxing cup and won gold! Caitlyn’s Poseidon Amateur Boxing club won two golds at this event, we are so proud of this achievement. Caitlyn is so dedicated to this sport, she trains every day and her hard work and commitment has paid off. Through her dedication Caitlyn flew home a day early in order to sit her RS GCSE. She now looks forward to completing in the GB Youth Championship in the Autumn and we wish her every success for her future boxing career.

Scholars Programme Graduation

This week our amazingly talented Year 9 and 10 students, who have been on the prestigious Scholar's Programme with The Brilliant Club, attended their graduation ceremony held at the University of Sussex. Our talented students had the opportunity to have an exclusive tour of the campus, attend a seminar where they learned about what it's really like to attend university and of course "graduate" and receive their certificates. We could not be more proud of our students, who stretched and challenged themselves to voluntarily attend weekly seminars with their PhD researcher, in addition to their everyday studies and complete a 2000 word assignment on the role of bacterial biofilms in chronic infections.

Many of our successful graduates went on to earn themselves a role in our student leadership team. We follow their journey with anticipation -how will our students impress us next? Well done to all of our Scholars Graduates of 2022.

Operation Sceptre

On Wednesday 18th May, PC Richards and his team from Hampshire Police visited the academy to deliver PD lessons to all of our Year 8 students regarding Operation Sceptre.

Operation Sceptre is a weeklong initiative focusing on the different strands of education, engagement, prevention and enforcement to reduce knife crime in the city and beyond.

PC Richard commented;

"Can I extend my thanks to the students who fully engaged with the sessions and it helped me get the correct messages across."

House Points!

The two students in each tutor group who have earned the most house points over the last 6 weeks were invited to attend a reward event so we could celebrate their achievements. A fun afternoon was had by all. Well done everyone, we are proud of you!

Year 7

Our Year 7 students continue to impress, leading the school with attendance and being second for reward points once more. It has also been great to see so many of our students taking part in the extra curricular opportunities on offer. In particular, I was very impressed by some of our young cricketers before school last week, and the excited atmosphere in Mr Mitra’s chess club on Tuesday.

As always, a huge well done to our stars of the week, nominated by their tutors for their outstanding contribution to academy life.

I am really pleased that we have been able to re-arrange our trip to KidZania, which will have taken place by the time the next edition of COAST comes out. Having been before a few years ago, I’m looking forward to heading up to London again with our students, giving them the opportunity to experience a range of different jobs.

Year 8

Year 8 have had another busy half term and getting fully involved with all the additional opportunities.

It was a pleasure to celebrate with Dr Saunders and the Year 8 teams who represented the school at the Big Ideas Event. I am delighted that one of the teams has made it through to the next round and whilst we were hopeful that the other team would make it as a wildcard entrant they unfortunately lost out. I look forward to supporting the teams and Dr Saunders with their initiatives in the next half term.

Although it was only a short term, the year group continue to lead the way with collecting house points for their efforts in school. The top two students from each tutor group were welcomed to a Golden Ticket event.

In addition to the Golden Ticket winners, Mr Brown asked for my Top 10 students; that was an incredibly difficult decision to narrow the year group to 10. I did ask if I could have more but was told that 10 was all I could have (I would have had the whole year group if I had had my way!) They were recognised for their conscientious nature to their learning, their progress that they made and personal achievements.

My Top 10 students were:

Darcey Jenkins, Timothy Hole, Annika Van Leeuwan, Ben Waddington, Andy Lin, Raul Peica Balosache, Libby Mae Jones, Imogen May, Toby Chalk, Bernard Guitierrez Mendoza

The last half-term of the year looks like it will be busy with end of year assessments, further reward events and preparations towards Year 9.

Year 9

In keeping with the theme of celebration and rewards for this edition, I am pleased to celebrate some fantastic student successes.

Attendance

It has been a difficult year for students to maintain 100% attendance and I know that many students had their excellent attendance runs thwarted by Covid, however school attendance is hugely important as there is a clear link between attendance and outcomes at GCSE. It is therefore a big well done to the following students: Heidi Barret, Ben Davidson, Yasmin Ladher, Konrad Lejman, Eddie Lin, Maya Moffatt, Ian Moraru, Jakob Neter, Kiaran Shotter, Elexie Southerington and Keira Williamson for managing to maintain 100% attendance all year.

Progress

You should have received your child’s report before the Easter break. I am very impressed with the excellent attitude to learning and progress shown by the vast majority of the year group, and the following students definitely need to be recognised for their excellent progress:

House Points

We are almost at the end of the house point year where we will be totting up the total number of house points each student has acquired and announcing the winning house. The students below have made a stunning contribution to their individual houses, gaining the number of points shown below:

Well done to all of those students mentioned in this newsletter, and have a lovely half term.

Year 10

Year 10's attended an A Level Masterclass held at Itchen College on the 28th April. A huge thank you to Mike Jones, Assistant Principal at Itchen College who organised this exciting opportunity for Oasis Academy Sholing. The sessions consisted of, Law and Criminology, Maths, Psychology, Geography, PE, and History. The students were an absolute credit to the school, and we received a glowing report from Mike Jones!

"I just wanted to let you know the group of pupils who came to Itchen for the masterclass sessions this evening were fantastic. They certainly represented the school very well; indeed, they were fully engaged in the sessions, and I have had all staff comment at just how well they felt their sessions went and what a delight they were."

"They clearly embraced the nature of what these sessions were designed to achieve, and it is full credit to them - please pass this on to the pupils."

Senior Team 2022 -2023

Student Leadership Team interviews were also held at Itchen College on Wednesday 11th May. What an exciting day we all had. The students were amazing, and they all did themselves proud. We had over forty students attending the interviews throughout the day with different activities including team building, individual tasks, and a tour of the college. As this was their first opportunity to be in an interview situation, they demonstrated excellent communication skills as well as coping with some difficult questions too! This has been great practice for college and job interviews in the future. I look forward to working with them in their different roles and responsibilities in Year 11. The start of next term, Year 10 students will be the oldest year group in school, and I have no doubt they will be excellent role models for our younger students.

Year 11 - Celebrating the life of Bailey Dorward

On Friday 29th April, we celebrated the life of Bailey Dorward, our Year 11 student who sadly passed away after losing his brave fight against Cancer earlier this month.

On the day, the academy held a non-school uniform day, where staff and students were asked to give a voluntary donation of £1.00, and to wear Bailey’s favourite colours, blue and yellow.

There was also a raffle and a cake sale held on school site during the day, with kind donations from the local community, students and parents.

A fantastic £929.90 was raised and donated to Abby’s Heroes, a local charity who supported Bailey and his family throughout his illness.

In this edition of COAST we would like to celebrate some of the work students in the TLC are producing:

Computing shout outs

We are proud of our computer scientists this term as they have all been venturing into programming. Year 7 have been working in scratch while Year 8 and 9 have been learning how to program in Python. They have developed their knowledge of sequencing, iteration and loops. The Computer Science staff introduced the topic by getting the students to think about a simple algorithm for making a jam sandwich. The students then attempted to use their algorithms to instruct Mr Bull or Mr Stacey to make a jam sandwich. The hilarious results included trying to get the jam out of the jar without taking off the lid.
