UD Cross Country Preview SEASON OUTLOOK FOR THE CRUSADERS

SNAP SHOT

The University of Dallas cross country team begins the 2017 season on September 1 at the UT-Tyler King Campbell Spectacular. The race is a two mile, and will be a good start as the Crusaders build distance at the next two competitions in the month.

Head coach Matthew Barber enters his fourth season guiding the cross country programs. His roster will be very young, with one senior on the men’s and women’s teams. Angela Moore competed her first season of cross country last year, and boasted a strong overall campaign. This included setting a school record and garnering a United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-American 1st Team accolade. The other senior on the men’s team is Peter deTar. He was a steady performer, finishing third for UD in each of his races and brings leadership after lettering the previous two seasons. John James, who was another top three runner last season, is studying abroad in Rome this fall and plans to be back with the track and field squad in the spring.

Both teams also match in the amount of returners that ran on the trails in 2016 with three total apiece. Besides the seniors, Caroline Schemel, Ana Wilhelm, Andrew Maal, and Maximilian Wilson represent the remaining runners that have previously competed with the cross country program. Schemel studied in Rome last fall, but did run in 2015 and has lettered both years in track and field. Wilhelm, Maal, and Wilson are slated to compete in their second seasons.

The women’s cross country team has 12 runners overall, with the remaining nine being newcomers this year. Included in this unit are freshmen: Emma Kate Callahan, Clare Hernandez, Alondra Hurtado, Kimberly Keally, Alexandra Ralles, Catherine Thelen, and Lauren Zammit. Mackenzie Tano is a sophomore dual athlete with the softball team. Hannah Guth ran in two meets but did not finish the season with the team.

On the men’s side there are 10 runners listed. Making up the seven newcomers include: Joseph Boyle, Elijah Depew, Peter Hedlesky, Joseph Kilmer, James Klatt, Shivam Mishra, and Gabe Vazquez. Everyone except Klatt within this group are freshmen. Depew is the younger brother of a fellow Dallas runner, Lizzie Depew. She competed two years in 2014 and ’15 with the track and field team.

QUOTABLES

“In the classroom, would like to see myself improve on last year and hoping to get national all-academic and conference honor roll awards. Running wise I am ready to get out there and travel again...developing our new wolf pack on the guys team.” - Andrew Maal on goals for the upcoming year

“So far I would describe the preseason as challenging coming in from high school…it is definitely a transition. I feel like how the team has grown so much in the last week, you are able to see how good of a team we are going to become. Coach Barber has definitely given us so far a diverse amount of workouts. I can see that I definitely become a well-rounded athlete and I am excited to see that.” - Clare Hernandez on how the first week of preseason went

BARBER ENTERS 4TH YEAR COACHING AT ALMA MATER

  • Matt Barber enters his fourth year as University of Dallas men's and women's cross country head coach. Overall under his tenure, the program has produced three individual records. Two were on the men's side in the 5,000 Meters by Ryan McAnany (Austin College Inviational on Oct. 18, 2014) and the 8,000 Meters by Thomas Hogan (USCAA Championship Nov. 11, 2016). On the women's side the other school record set came in the 6,000 Meters by Angela Moore (USCAA Championship on Nov. 11, 2016).
  • Also during Barber's tutelage, there have been four All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) teams (three men's), three United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-Americans (two womens), and 10 on the USCAA National All-Academic Team (six women's).
  • Highlighting strong individual years under Barber were Moore and Hogan. Both notched school records in their debut seasons in the USCAA Championship. Moore ran a 23:38 in a 6k and Hogan broke the 8k mark with a 26:24. Moore qualified on the USCAA All-American First Team and Hogan was named to the SCAC and USCAA Second Teams.
  • A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Barber obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from UD in May 2013. He was a two-year letterwinner for Men's Track & Field and landed on the 2013 Men's Track & Field Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll. Active in campus life, Barber was also a member of Crusaders for Kids. He recruited for the organization at university social events, and provided companionship to hospitalized children.
  • Barber went on to teach Theology and serve as a track & field assistant coach at John Paul II High School (Plano, Texas).
  • Barber coached the Cardinals in long-distance running, jumps, relays and sprints, advising student-athletes in the areas of form and technique.
  • Barber holds a USA Track & Field Level I (Coach) designation, and is AED, CPR and First Aid certified.
  • Academically, Moore and Bridget Kennedy earned spots on the USCAA National All-Academic Team.
