Seward County claims program's first national title
Tyler, TX - Seward County (KS) claimed the 2022 NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center on the campus of Tyler Junior College. The Saints posted a team score of 45, narrowly out scoring fellow Region 6 competitor Cowley (KS) with 43 points.
Saints battle for national title
The Seward County Saints posted an all-around strong performance at the 2022 NJCAA DI Men's Tennis Championship. Seward County was represented in four of the six singles championship matches and two of the three doubles championship matches.
Kyllian Savary and Karlo Krolo earned individual national titles for the Saint. Savary defeated Cowley's Hanamichi Carvajal in the No. 3 singles championship contest by scores of 6-2, 4-6, and 6-1. Krolo earned the No. 5 singles title by besting Tyler's Jakob Mosvold 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(2).
In doubles, the pair of Savary and Luke Quaynor brought home the No. 2 flight title for Seward County after defeating a strong duo from Tyler by scores of 1-6, 6-4, and 6-3.
Cowley claims runner-up finish
For the second consecutive season, the Cowley Tigers finished in second place at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship. This is the fourth consecutive season that the Tigers have finished in the top-five at the national tournament.
Sophomore Takeshi Taco added to his national title resume, claiming the No. 1 singles title with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Abraham Baldwin's Gaston Cantero. In 2021, Taco earned national champion accolades in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
The pair of Taco and Andoni Garmendia finished as runners-up in the No. 3 doubles flight behind Tyler's pair of Alvaro Saint Marin and Emilio Vila. Garmendia garnered individual national honors as the No. 6 singles flight champion, defeating Seward County's Martins Abamu.
Apaches earn third place finish
Tyler (TX) earned 42 team points in this year's national tournament, solidifying the bronze trophy for the Apaches. The storied program was represented in five of the nine title contests, claiming one individual title and two doubles titles.
Emilio Vila earned the lone singles title for the Apaches, claiming victory in the No. 4 flight over Tyler's Gaston Erhart. The pair of Mikar Fisher and Jakob Mosvold won the No. 1 doubles contest, defeating Seward County's Fisicaro are Krolo. In the No. 3 doubles flight, Alvaro Saint Martin and Vila were named champions for the Apaches.
