What lead to this event happening was when the state of North Carolina didn't let colored and whites sit together and segregated the restaurants. This happened on February 1, 1960 in North Carolina.
The goal of this event was to give equal rights in restaurants. The type of people that were involved in these sit-ins were several colored students from North Carolina A&T college. The important people that impacted this event were four colored students from North Carolina A&T College. They all sat down at a Woolworth lunch counter in downtown Greensboro, North CarolinaThe students named Joseph McNeil, Izell Blair, Franklin McCain, and David Richmond—purchased several items in the store before sitting at the counter reserved for white customers. When a waitress asked them to leave, they politely refused; to their surprise, they were not arrested. The four students remained seated for almost an hour until the store closedThe following morning about two dozen students arrived at Woolworth’s and sat at the lunch counter. Although no problems occurred, the second sit-in attracted the local news. By day three of the campaign, the students formed the Student Executive Committee for Justice to coordinate protests.
What kind of obstacles these groups were facing were getting arrested, routinely beaten by segregationists and police even though they were protesting peacefully. They overcame these obstacles by having great determination and confidence in there nonviolence acts. Martin Luther King wrote: ‘‘The key significance of the student movement lies in the fact that from its inception, everywhere, it has combined direct action with non-violence. This quality has given it the extraordinary power and discipline which every thinking person observes’’ which explains their power and progress they were making.
The sit-ins impacted the South by 1960, there were signs that the southern civil rights movement had been profoundly transformed by the fiercely independent student protest movement. Those who had participated in the sit-in campaign were determined to continue the direct action tactics that were seizing the initiative from more cautious organizations made up of of sit-ins. The lasting effects were the sit-ins demonstrated that mass nonviolent direct action could be successful and brought national media attention to the new era of the civil rights movement and the battle to end racial injustice combined legal action with direct public protest.
One modern day event that is connected to my civil rights event is the black lives matter protests because of the blocking on highways with people. Also with the cops shooting colored people and started outrage with peaceful protests.
