Desert Tortoise Adoption Quick-Start Guide

Each year AZGFD adopts out hundreds of captive desert tortoises that are surrendered to the department - often the result of illegal backyard breeding. These tortoises cannot be released back into the wild because captive tortoises can transmit diseases that can decimate our wild population. Desert tortoises are nontraditional pets, but are fascinating animals the whole family will love! Just a reminder, these tortoises cannot leave the state, so adoptions are open to Arizona residents only. Thank you!

STEP ONE: BUILD YOUR BURROW

This video shows you two easy options for constructing a burrow fit for desert tortoise royalty!

STEP TWO: PLAN YOUR MENU

Not sure what a desert tortoise eats? Fear not! We have a handy guide that covers optimum tortoise diet - from native plants you can grow in your yard to healthy options available for purchase. The guide also covers what NOT to let your tortoise eat, so definitely check it out!

STEP THREE: APPLY ONLINE!

Your burrow is built, you've planned your tortoise menu and now it's time to apply for adoption! Get out your camera - we'll need photos of the enclosure, completed burrow, nearby plants and security measures, including yard access (e.g. gate). Please include 5-10 photos. Once you have those ready, it's time to submit your adoption application - exciting!
