Spring 1 Nursery class

This half term had a couple of unexpected surprises in store for Nursery class, despite this the children amazed us with their resilience and adaptability.

One morning in January the children entered class to find some strange footprints on the floor.

"I think it's the Gruffalo that's been in here"
"It's the big bad wolf!"

The children received a message from the Three Little Pigs asking them to help build a house that the Big Bad Wolf could not blow down.

Using a range of tools and resources they set to work designing and creating different structures.

We developed mathematical language by drawing maps for the Big Bad Wolf.

"Through the tunnel to his house"
"He goes round and round"
"Zig Zag, Zig zag all the way to the little pigs house.

In phonics the children have enjoyed exploring rhyme and alliteration.

They created aliens aliens with alliterative names.

Over the past few weeks the children have also had great fun creating their own rhyming strings.

Tuesday 1st February marked the start of the celebrations for Chinese new year.

Looking at Chinese writing inspired us to mark make, this gave us a great opportunity to develop our fine motor skills.

Some children chose to create their own Chinese dragon by folding paper and using their scissor skills.

Tuesday 8TH February WAS SAFER INTERNET DAY. We read the story 'chicken clicking' and talked about the importance of always asking an adult before accessing technology.

The children have learnt three new Poetry Basket poems.

What is coming up in Spring term 2?

The theme during the first part of Spring term 2 is Castles and Creatures. This is based on the children's interest in dragons and fairies.

We will be sharing these books together in class.

Next half term we will be continuing to develop our phonological awareness by:

N2 children will be focusing on embedding the skill of orally blending and segmenting words. - This is where children hear and say the individual sounds that make up each word.
Towards the end of the half term the N2 children will begin to be introduced to some phonemes and graphemes.
N1 children will continue to work through the 'Body Percussion' aspect of Phase 1 phonics.

Mathematics

In maths the children will be introduced to different 2D shapes, we will be describing them using both informal and mathematical language. There are many different shapes in our environment. What shapes can you see around you?
We will also be looking at identifying and continuing simple repeating patterns.

Literacy

Next half term we will be encouraging children to use their developing fine motor skills to write some letters from their first name.
Children in nursery will continue to develop their story telling and listening skills as they share a wide variety of new stories together.
Our key story will be Little Rabbit Foo Foo. We will be reading this story then re-telling it using a story map.
Mother's Day falls next half term.
We will be sharing special memories about our own family / carers and reasons why we love them.
As we head through the half term towards Easter we will be reading the story 'We're going on an egg hunt' by Laura Hughes.
We might even go on an egg hunt of our own...
I wonder how many we will find?

We will learn about how Easter is celebrated.

Enjoy a wonderful half term with family and friends.
We will see you on Monday 28th February.
