Class 5

Literacy

At the start of the term we continued to work on ‘The Dragon Machine’ and built upon our skills we learnt about last term about prepositions.

We then continued to build up our narrative skills and had the opportunity to practise using the prefix un, past and present words and contractions to add more detail to our work.

The children blew us away with the quality of the work they produced. It was fantastic to see the progress everyone had made since September.

We then moved onto looking at non- chronological reports. The focus of these reports was castles linked to history topic ‘Dungeons and Dragons.’

We started this topic by having a visit from the castle ditcher where the children had the opportunity to ask him question about life in castle. The children then used the information gathered to add extra detail to their reports.

The skills we built up before writing our reports focused upon the features on a non-chronological report, subject specific adjectives and different types of sentences I.e. statements, questions, commands and exclamations.

Our final piece of writing for the half term was to write a diary entry based around the story ‘Mogs Christmas.’

First we learnt about the features of a diary such as writing in the first person and then we moved onto learning about co-ordinating conjunctions (and, but and or) and subordinating conjunctions (because, that, if and when) to extend our sentences.

The children produced some excellent pieces of work with a variety of different sentences openers to engage the reader.

After that we looked at money and how we could used coins to make certain amounts. We also looked at adding coins and finding change.
