Grammys awards 2021: reviewing red carpet fashion by: margot richlin '23

Although much of this year’s 63rd annual Grammys ceremony was modified due to COVID-19, one aspect that remained the same were the prestigious looks that the Grammy-goers modeled for the evening, and many of the looks that hit the Grammy stage on March 14 were worth recognition.

To commence the evening, Harry Styles took to the stage to sing his hit song "Watermelon Sugar." Not only did Styles take home his first-ever Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance, but he has also been dubbed best-dressed male by fans on social media over these past few weeks. On both the red carpet and the stage, Styles was dressed entirely in Gucci. On the carpet, he wore a yellow checked blazer, flared brown pants and a light purple boa, the most talked-about accessory of the evening. I adored this look as it was unexpected and much edgier than many of his previous outfits.

Taking home Best Pop Vocal Album for “Future Nostalgia,” Dua Lipa stunned on the carpet in her sheer Versace gown. Although slightly different from her usual carpet attire, this look was a fan favorite. Her pink transparent gown with a butterfly detail was decked out in crystals and she accessorized it with jewelry from the brand BVLGARI. This look was completed with pink glittery eyeshadow and slicked-back Cher-inspired hair. This outfit was one of my top picks as it was an eye-catching and memorable red carpet moment.

Everyone’s favorite brother-sister duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell took the Grammys by storm in their pink Gucci attire. Billie and Finneas brought home the Grammy for Record of the Year for the second year in a row, this year for their hit song, “Everything I Wanted.” They additionally won the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media with Eilish’s Bond theme song “No Time To Die.” The two were dressed impeccably for this event, Finneas wearing a blush-colored Gucci suit and Billie also in a custom look by Gucci. Billie paired her outfit with a matching manicure, bucket hat and a face mask. My favorite part of these outfits was how elaborately planned they were down to the very last detail. I loved this look for Billie; however, her performance outfit takes the number one spot in my book. Eilish performed in a green and black crystal-embellished pant set and jeweled headpiece which I would give a ten out of ten.

One of the artists I was most excited to see on the Grammys carpet was Lizzo, and she surely did not disappoint. Lizzo arrived in a ruched, pale green, strapless Balmain dress, paired with Stuart Weitzman sandals and BVLGARI Serpenti jewelry. Although simple, this outfit was very elegant and glamorous. Lizzo’s confidence radiated through in this outfit and the smile she had on her face at all times was contagious. Lizzo took to TikTok to show her love for the moveability of this dress, giving fans even more behind-the-scenes content.

Beyoncé made history at the 63rd Grammys when she took the stage beside Megan Thee Stallion to accept Best Rap Song for Stallion’s “Savage,” which she was featured on. Beyoncé not only added four more Grammys to her repertoire but her name was put into the record books when she received her 28th Grammy award and became the female artist with the most Grammys. Beyoncé pulled up to the Grammys in a fitted black leather Schiaparelli dress styled with statement earrings and her hair in middle-parted waves. This outfit was one of my personal favorites. Although Queen Bey never disappoints, the elegance and class that this outfit displayed particularly stood out to me.

Megan Thee Stallion made a stand-out appearance at this year’s Grammys when she won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song with her song “Savage.” She also took home Best New Artist and did it all in high fashion. Megan wore a neon orange Dolce & Gabbana gown and Chopard jewelry. This look definitely makes my top five as I thought that this look was the perfect amount of unique and elegant. So many people stray away from super bright colors at award shows such as the Grammys; however, I think that this fluorescent-colored gown could not have been more perfect for the event.

Taylor Swift hit the Grammys carpet in an Oscar de la Renta floral gown and Christian Louboutin shoes. It was a very successful night for Swift as she won Album of the Year for “Folklore.” Along with Beyoncé, Taylor’s win also made the history books as she became the first-ever woman to win Album of the Year three times. As for her outfit, although it was not my favorite look of the night, it definitely caught my attention and was one I will remember for a long time. The varying colors in the flowers on this dress along with the high neckline made this dress very interesting to look at. Her makeup and shoes were definitely my favorite aspect of this outfit as they complimented her look very well.

These were only some of the looks that caught my attention at this Grammys ceremony, as there were several more that were just as breathtaking and some that seemed to fall short. My top three favorite looks would have to be Harry Styles, Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa as they all seemed to be original and out of the box, expressing each of the artists’ individuality. I was very impressed with all of the celebrities’ outfits this year and can't wait to see how they top it next year.
