Bob and Pat Barker give generously to Campbell Law clinic to expand Second Chance Act efforts
Bob and Pat Barker believe in giving folks a second chance. And the couple is not just giving lip service. They are putting their money where their mouths are, specifically through a generous donation to Campbell Law School. The Barkers recently gave Campbell Law School $200,000 to expand the work of the Blanchard Community Law Clinic. “Thanks in large part to this generous donation from Bob and Pat Barker, Campbell Law’s Blanchard Community Law Clinic will be able to hire additional attorneys to work with our Clinic Director Ashley Campbell allowing triple the number of our law students to assist with the growing expunction requests made possible by the Second Chance Act,” Dean J. Rich Leonard explained. “In addition, the funding allows us to go mobile with our clinic services and expand our reach to help those in rural areas of Eastern North Carolina. Our goal is to create a model for others to similarly help rural areas throughout the state.” The Barkers have also given Campbell University an additional $1 million to support its overall mission. Campbell Law alumnus portrayed in upcoming feature film ‘The Mauritanian’
What would you do if you found out that one of your alumni was going to be portrayed in a movie by Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch? If you’re Campbell Law School Dean J. Rich Leonard, you ask if there is a scene in the movie in which Cumberbatch could possibly wear a polo bearing the Campbell University logo? And then you make sure that polo gets into the hands of the filmmakers, who just happen to be filming halfway around the world. The result? The photo above. You can learn more about who the alumnus is and watch the trailer at this link. In the meantime, keep an eye out for an invitation from the Dean to an in-person, exclusive premiere of the movie later in January.

Professor receives highest honor for law book from the Romanian Academy
Campbell Law Professor Raluca Papadima has been recognized by the Romanian Academy for the best law publication in 2018. The book that received this prestigious honor, announced earlier this month, was based on her PhD thesis, which had already received high accolades. “European and Comparative Corporate and Business Law” is written in French and was published in Romania in 2018. Professor Papadima’s book was the only law publication to receive an award from the Romanian Academy this year. Historically, several awards are given in this category each year, making the achievement even more meaningful, Papadima said. Read more at this link.

Campbell Law gives a huge thanks to Todd Jones '98 and Kimberly Miller '07 for their service on the Campbell Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, which was launched in 2015. For three years Jones served as the inaugural chair and Miller served as the inaugural vice-chair after being appointed to the board by Dean J. Rich Leonard. The duo remained on the board until retiring from service earlier this month. Today the law school boasts a successful alumni association thanks in large part to the board of directors that they helped build from the ground up! Now that's #leadingwithpurpose

Help us celebrate Campbell Law's 45 years as a law school in 2021
As Campbell Law School celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2021, we would like to feature 45 alumni who are living the university's motto, "Leading With Purpose." Nominees will be asked to fill out a Q&A and provide a high-res photo to be featured on the law school's website and social media as well as in a year-end publication. Our plan is to host an in-person gala (if conditions permit) celebrating the 45 and their accomplishments in the fall. If you would like to nominate yourself or another alumnus/na, please contact Communications and Marketing Director Lisa Snedeker at lsnedeker@campbell.edu.
FIVE WAYS TO GIVE BY YEAR'S END
As we wind up the year that was 2020, we want to say thank you for your continued support of Campbell Law. And we hope you will consider giving the gift that keeps on giving to the next generation of students who are nervously awaiting their exam results just like you did. You can make a gift at this link. We also want you to keep an eye out in your mailbox for the latest Campbell "Law Brief," which contains an envelope to make it convenient for you to drop in a check if you prefer to give via snail mail rather than online.
And did you know?
If you give a charitable gift by Dec. 31, 2020, the CARES Act allows you to write off up to $300 in cash donations on your 2020 income tax return even if you don't itemize. Thanks to this provision, you can make a difference with a year-end cash donation to Campbell Law and reap the benefits during tax season.
Join us for virtual 'Meet the 1Ls' event
