Johnston Community Primary School October 7th 2022

Winter Approaches

As we inch towards the middle of October, I'm sure you've noticed the leaves turning golden and the air feeling a little cooler in the mornings. With this in mind, parents and carers may want to think about dusting off welly boots (or checking they still fit!) and making sure that waterproof coats are clearly named. We are finding lots of jumpers and jackets in the playground after play times that are not named. Please help us by making sure that your child's belongings have names in them.

Senior Prefects

A huge well done to all of the pupils who applied for our senior prefect positions. We are very proud of you and your excellent work. It was an incredibly difficult to make a decision.

Congratulations to the following pupils, we look forward to the positive improvements you will bring to Johnston C.P. School.

Head Boy: Ollie Evans

Head Girl: Billie Peace

Deputy Head Boy: Jac James

Deputy Head Girl: Ffion Lane

School Leadership

As noted in the newsletter last week, Mr. Thomas has been working at Fenton Community Primary School as the Interim Headteacher. For the next few weeks, Mr. Thomas will continue to be headteacher of Johnston and the Interim Headteacher of Fenton C.P. School. His time will be split between both schools with Mr. Williams deputising for him on the days that he is supporting Fenton. We would like to reassure you that it will be business as usual at Johnston.

Shwmae Day!

We will be celebrating Shwmae Day on Friday 14th October! We will be organising lots of fun activities for pupils in class and around school.

Children are invited to wear red to celebrate the day.

Welcome Miss Harty

You may have noticed that we have a new member of staff visiting classrooms this week. Miss Harty has joined us as part of her PGCE Placement from Aberystwyth University. Miss Harty will be working at the school until Christmas and she will be spending most of her times in years four and year one. Miss Harty Has a wealth of experience having working in Milford Haven Primary School prior to commencement of her PGCE.

We benefit financially from our partnership with Aberystwyth University and we are planning on developing this further in the future.

Friends of Johnston C.P. School

The Friends of Johnston School has been an active group for almost thirty years and the school is extremely grateful for the support which various members have offered during this time.

You may be aware that we have established a Friends to support our efforts to improve our field and outdoor learning provision. This is a separate group to our Friends of Johnston C.P. School.

We are planning on relaunching our Friends of Johnston C.P. School during the next few weeks. We welcome old and new members to create a fundraising plan for the year ahead.

K.O. Carpets

We would like to say a huge thank you to K.O. Carpets for making an annual donation to the school. We are extremely grateful for the support. Your generosity is a testament to the community spirit in Johnston.

We are planning on spending the money to create shaded areas for pupils to play in during hot days!

Keeping in Touch

Please use the playground in the mornings or after school to pass on quick messages to class teachers. Wherever possible, the teacher should always be the first port of call if you have any concerns or questions.

General enquiries, questions or concerns: Please speak to the class teacher in the first instance. If not, you can call the school office on 01437 890280 and we can then arrange for the relevant person to call you back. If you would like to contact me directly, my email address is: Williamsr1688hwbcymru.net

Harvest Celebrations

Our whole school is supporting the local charity, P.A.T.C.H. (Pembrokeshire Action to Combat Hardship) this term. We would be grateful if children would bring in any dried or tinned food stuffs before half term, which we will then pass on to the charity

Smart Phone Free Schools

We are considering becoming a smart phone free school. We value the opinions of our parents and we have created a short questionnaire to help us understand parental opinions on this issue.

Rugby

Mr. Gardiner and Mr. Elliot have kindly offered to run another rugby training session on Thursday 13th after school.

Cross-Country

The Primary Cross-Country Championships will be held during the last week of the half term. Any pupils who would like to train for the event during lunch times should begin bringing trainers to school everyday. The grass on our large field can be very wet so it is helpful if pupils bring an additional pair of trainers. I will begin on Monday working with year five pupils.
