Important Person

John Smith founded the first colony, Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. He was the only colonist with experience as a soldier. He knew how to deal with the Natives, though sometimes extreme and violent. Many colonists disliked him because he made rules that everyone had to follow.

Religion

Anglican Church

White colonists in Virginia had to worship the Anglican Church (Church of England). They also had to support the church by paying taxes and ties. People in Virginia were still very much under British command.

Geography/Weather

The Jamestown Colony had swamps, wetlands, and waterways near the ocean. It had coastal plains, valleys, and small mountains and foothills near the Appalachian Mountains. The Southern colonies were the hottest of the three colony groups. The high temperatures caused disease to spread easier throughout the colony, but was good for crops.

Economy/Roles

Tobacco Plants

Since John Smith implemented the rule "He who does not work shall not eat," everyone had to work and help in the colony in order to eat. At first, the men of the colony complained that there weren't enough women, so more women came from England to start families. Tobacco was a huge money crop developed in Jamestown by John Ralfe.
