CPT Jarrett Hopewell Recognized as Teacher of the Term for Term 4

Fork Union Military Academy congratulates CPT Jarrett Hopewell for being named Teacher of the Term 4 of the 2021-2022 academic year. Cadets submit nominations for the Teacher of the Term at the conclusion of each grading term. The cadet nominations are reviewed and evaluated by the Teacher of the Term/Year Committee, which is comprised of non-academic staff members. After considering cadet nominations, the Committee announces the Teacher of the Term.

CPT Hopewell is in his first year at the Academy and taught Spanish I during Term 4. He is a graduate of the University of Montana with a bachelor’s degree in Classical Languages and later received his master’s in Linguistics.

Outside of the classroom, CPT Hopewell assists with Retan Rifles.

CPT Hopewell received nominations that stated:

"He is an incredible teacher who cares about his students. He always finds a way to make class fun. He is just an all-around good guy who is very nice."

"CPT Hopewell makes class interesting every single day with different varieties of learning resources. He gives us extra time, helps us when we need it, and uses a variety of resources that help us understand the topic better and even makes it fun while we are engaged in learning. CPT Hopewell stays in his classroom most of the week during CQ preparing his lesson plans for the next day and offers to help with any homework or any other assignments that we would need help with."

Congratulations, CPT Hopewell!

Stremlau, Morris Place in Top Three of the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest

Seventh-graders Kadin Stremlau and Cole Morris placed in the top three of the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, the VFW of Louisa announced this past week. Stremlau place first in the competition, while Morris took third place.

Each year in October, MAJ David Mitchell helps his seventh-grade students enter the contest, which requires a 400-word essay expressing their views based on the patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. This year’s theme was “How Can I Be a Good American?”

Stremlau is the son of Kelly Stremlau of McAllen, Texas. Morris is the son of Amber Townsend of Scottsville, Virginia.

Congratulations, Kadin and Cole!

This Week's Bravo Zulu Award Winners

Every Friday the Fork Union Military Faculty and Staff meet to nominate a few who have exceeded the standards and demonstrated superlative performance. Whilst we have various awards and recognitions - a simple "Well Done!" we hope, is also appreciated. The combination of the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags, i.e., Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance.

The following are the Bravo Zulu awards for this week:

Cadet Staff Sergeant Matthew Vinso is a junior and first-year cadet in Alpha Company. He is a Boarding student from Stafford, VA. In addition to his duties as Detail NCO for his company, Cadet Vinso helps run the snack bar in the Social Center. While working in the Social Center this past weekend, he volunteered to take an alumnus and his spouse on a campus tour. They were very appreciative of his time and professionalism. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Vinso!

Cadet Staff Sergeant Dominic Julius is a senior and third-year cadet in Bravo Company. He is a boarding student from Philadelphia, PA. Cadet Julius won the 400-meter event at our last track meet. He is ranked top within the state and will be attending Youngstown State University in the fall on a full scholarship. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Julius!

Cadet Sergeant Jimmy Sa Said is an eighth grader and first-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from Mexico City, MX. In preparing for parade season, he has led his squad to be the best in drill and ceremonies as well as manual of arms with the M1 grand rifle. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Sa Said!

Cadet Major Massimo Swail is a senior and fourth-year cadet in Headquarters and Service Company. He is a boarding student from Miami, FL. At the beginning of the year, Cadet Swail was promoted to the rank of captain. After months of hard work and dedication, he has been promoted to the rank of major for his outstanding performance. His dedication to excellence is an inspirational example to the other cadets. Cadet Swail will attend The Citadel in the fall. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Swail!

Bravo, gentlemen!
