Social Media Toolkit | #WorldTBDay

World TB Day is observed annually on March 24th to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB), a leading cause of infectious disease death worldwide. The entire month of March is now seen as an opportunity to highlight the efforts made to prevent, diagnose, and treat TB, as well as to call for increased action to eliminate the disease globally. The theme of World TB Day 2023 is "Yes! We Can End TB" and focuses on the urgent need to scale up efforts to end TB, especially in the context of recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and how our collective power can finally bring an end to this age-old disease.

We Can End TB

TB remains a significant global health problem, with about 10 million people falling ill with TB each year and 1.6 million people being killed by the disease in 2021 alone.

Ending TB requires a multifaceted approach, including advancing the development of tools for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care. Early detection and diagnosis are crucial in stopping the spread of TB, and effective treatment with a regimen of antibiotics can cure the disease. However, drug-resistant TB remains a major obstacle to ending the disease once and for all.

Seeing a world without TB also requires political will, resources, and global funding to support research, development, and implementation of effective strategies. With sustained efforts from governments and the international community, and by working together, we can #EndTB.

R&D to End TB

Investing in research and development (R&D) for TB can lead to the development of newer, more effective tools and treatments. This can help improve patient outcomes and reduce transmission of the disease, particularly drug-resistant forms of TB.

“With enhanced commitment and global collaboration, we can overcome these global health challenges and one day see a world where no one dies of TB.” — Dr. Mel Spigelman, president & CEO, TB Alliance

Investment in TB R&D can help to strengthen health systems and build capacity for control and prevention, which is essential for sustainable progress in the fight against TB.
