In January/February 5th Grade created Gelli Prints. This is a form of printmaking where students created a stencil and masked certain areas to create an image. They printed their blue/green layer first. Then they used their stencil to create their red vase and flowers- they printed in red and everywhere that is still blue/green was masked by their stencil. Finally, they added details using oil pastels.
3rd Graders worked incredibly hard to create llamas from Peru! We learned about the terrain of Peru and how the llamas are very special animals to the people there. We also learned about how people use the llamas fur to create yarn which is then dyed to create beautiful woven blankets and scarves. The students drew their llamas and colored them with color pencil. Then they spent several weeks meticulously working to create woven yarn blankets to sit on their llamas backs.
First and second graders did a deep dive into the world of fairies. We looked at historical photographs of the Cottingley Fairies made by two girls in 1917. Then we were inspired to create our own doors for fairies to live in. We looked at fairy doors that appeared in Ann Arbor Michigan and read the stories "The Cottingley Fairies" and "Backyard Fairies" in our exploration.
Kindergarten explored printmaking by creating their own giant hearts and foam shapes. We looked at the story "The Shape of My Heart" and explored different shapes and letters. We discovered how shapes appear backwards when printed using paint onto a sheet of paper. We cut out our printed hearts and then decorated the background using special paint sticks. We practiced counting by drawing 10 dots of each color to make a total of 90 dots in our background. You should have heard the wonderful chorus of students counting 1....2....3...4......
