6th Grade

1st Place

"Once Upon A Alebrije " by Sylvia Schmidt at Loch Raven Technical Academy, Grade 6
I've made an Alebrije, which is a type of Mexican folk art animal combo. I came up with the idea after learning about Alebrijes in art class. I learned that an Alebrije is a brightly colored Mexican folk art sculpture of fantastical creatures. The making process started with a drawing of what I wanted to make, then I started to ball up newspaper and tape it together as well as using card paper to make the small ears and the wings. Then the first layers of plaster were added. After that I dried a wire that was added to the wings and was hot glued then plastered over. After another drying process the last few layers are added and then the body is finished. After this, I mapped out what colors I wanted to use for the patterns and where I wanted to put them. That's when I got paint and got to work watering the paint down and doing transitions. Afterwards smaller patterns were added and then the project was done.

2nd Place

"Shoes" by Kira Crockett at General John Stricker Middle School, Grade 6

3rd Place

"Landscape in Layers" by Cristine Ramirez-Rivera at Parkville Middle School, Grade 6
One thing you should always remember when making art is not to criticize the artwork and to trust he process. Thinking this when doing art is that my art doesn't have to be perfect when I start it or a new piece of art. The hardest thing about this work was finding the right colors and cover all the empty spots that had no color. The easiest part was fining the environment to do.

Best in Show

"Bagalso with mask " by Carlos Diaz-Roque at Lansdowne Middle School, Grade 6
I like to draw human figures because I feel like it's one of the most realistic things that anyone could draw. I drew it by looking at my teacher sitting on a stool modeling for us. Drawing the human figure is nice and you can make the posture and position of how he is sitting look exactly how it is in real life, which makes the drawing look very vivid and stand out. Something that you could see in my portrait that can bring things out is the mask. It indicates the pandemic of 2020 and brings out the chaos of the pandemic that lasted 2 years, and how we used to have to use masks.

Honorable Mention

"Bridge " by Tru Thompson Smallwood at Northwest Academy of Health Sciences, Grade 6
Teacher Statement by Mrs. Monica Rastegar: As part of the BCPS Curriculum Quarter 4 Theme, Nature and Environment, Tru’s 6th grade class was provided with digital and paper photos of bridges from around the world to choose from. We briefly studied the various types of bridges (suspension, truss, etc.). We learned about the forces of tension and compression that engineers harness to create stable bridge structures. Students pushed their own fists together to feel compression. Students pulled on their own interlocked index fingers to experience tension. Tru chose a very complex and emotive photograph of a bridge from an eastern European country. A large part of the photo is an elaborate architectural structure. The subtle layers of details might have made a different 6th grader return that photo to the table folder. Not Tru Thompson-Smallwood. She delighted in the photo. Tru used some of the techniques we had learned earlier this quarter as part of the BCPS Nature and Environment theme to select details for her composition. In the final drawing, Tru has included energetic lines to communicate the flow of the river under the solid, heavy bridge. The formal, elaborately decorated building contrasts with the beautiful local architecture by its side. Tru has used patterns of lines in her tiles, roofs, and other building details to add movement and rhythm to her drawing. Oh, what a pencil can do!

Honorable Mention

"Dinky the Parrot" by Sevyn Singletary at Deer Park Middle Magnet School, Grade 6
This is Dinky. He’s my pet parrotlet but he doesn’t scream at night when I’m trying to sleep. I chose a parrotlet because I really wanted one, but my parents didn’t like the idea of having a bird, so now I’m thinking about getting a pet snail. I wish I could’ve made a snail pot to be Dinky’s friend. But I think that Dinky looks very cute as a pot because of his big eyes and big smile. He is my favorite art project. Originally, I wanted to give him feet so he could stand up, but it didn’t stay for very long. And then I tried to make him sit with his feet sticking out, but the feet popped off. So now he just sits on his body. He is very patient. I chose bright greens and yellows because they are the colors of a Pacific parrotlet which is the species of parrotlet I decided to reference.

Honorable Mention

"Jicheal Maxon" by Roshnee Ramji at Cockeysville Middle School, Grade 6

Honorable Mention

"Heaven" by Nya Anders at Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, Grade 6

7th Grade

1st Place

"I Like to Draw" by Hana Oishi at Ridgely Middle School, Grade 7
I titled my work "I like to draw" because the drawing I drew was a drawing of myself drawing, and I really like drawing personally. The materials I used to make my self-portrait were one mechanical pencil, one b- pencil, and one H-pencil. I transformed my blank sheet of paper into a finished self portrait by pushing really hard on my pencil to make darker shapes like the hair and face. My self- portrait communicates how I like to draw. This can be seen in the artwork where I drew a drawing pencil and the small scribbles on the paper. The background is also the room where all my art supplies are kept, and I drew a easel behind the drawing pencil. The area of my portrait I am the most proud of is the hand that is closer to the camera because the fingers look really natural and the shading is accurate. The hand was also really hard to draw so I am happy that the result is something that I am proud of.

2nd Place

"Still life with Gourds" by Alicia Jiang, at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 7
I chose these objects because they seemed simple but had texture and details to them too. I also loved the shape of the pumpkins, the texture on the pumpkins was really cool to draw and observe. I learned the technique that I used for this piece outside of school. I basically draw lines in many different directions to fill in the shapes and shadows of the object similar to crosshatching, it’s very simple and neat.

3rd Place

"My Self" by David Arowolo at Perry Hall Middle School, Grade 7
My self-portrait showed my simplicity by showing the bright colored diverse shapes in my work. My challenges in the portrait were mostly based on facial features especially the lips, I tried minimizing the lips to make it look natural. I used pencil and paint. Because I wanted to sketch my face out and paint-colored boxes on my face and I also painted boxes around my face as a background.

Best in Show

"P.O.V. Paper" by Michelle Wang at Ridgely Middle School, Grade 7
As I prepare my artwork for presentation, I have decided to title my work P.O.V. Paper. I have chosen to use this title because I thought about a pose that would represent me. I really like drawing and would like to improve on it so I decided to make it look like I was drawing on something. The materials I used for this self-portrait artwork were The HB pencil, my mechanical pencil and the light version of the HB pencil. I transformed my blank sheet of paper into a finished self portrait by first sketching down where I want the subjects of my artwork to be. Then, I used a full range of values to make my self-portrait realistic and pop out. My self-portrait artwork communicates that I really like to draw. This can be seen in my artwork where I am posing like I am drawing on something.

Honorable Mention

"Garage in perspective " by Blayne Lowe at Lansdowne Middle School, Grade 7
I chose to draw a 70 Chevrolet nova in the process of being worked on in a garage. I chose this because I’m a big car person and I like the style of classic cars in rough shape. Some of the important key features of this project are it’s a classic car, it made with watercolors, thin sharpie marker for the lines. I hope for people to think about my drawing by thinking about how vehicles are one of the most valuable and historic things in the human life because they get you where you need to go fast.

Honorable Mention

"Water" by Kayla Le at Pine Grove Middle School, Grade 7
In my final project for my self-portrait, you can see that I'm wearing a hoodie and that my head is in two different positions. I drew my head in two different positions because I was trying to show movement in the painting. I used blue watercolor for my painting since I thought the blue would look nice and be simple to work with since it was my first time painting with watercolor. While painting the self-portrait, I learned that you had to paint from lightest to darkest layer by layer. Since I wanted to make sure it was realistic, I used thin brushes more often than thicker brushes since thin brushes could get details like shadows. My goals for the piece were to make the proportions accurate and similar to the pictures. I think I reached my goals decently well with some mistakes in the face. During the process, I learned to take your time with artwork, especially watercolor, since you had to let the layers dry. The result was close to what I imagined, and I am content with it. I'll take my time and let all the layers dry properly in future art I make with watercolor.

Honorable Mention

"Crooked Smile" by D'Ziyre Warner at Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, Grade 7
This portrait is about laughter. It shows a crooked smile that is not perfect. My self-portrait is about accepting yourself and becoming the person you want to be while smiling through your struggles.

Honorable Mention

"Blue Pansy Butterfly" by Madeleine Hoyle at Middle River Middle School, Grade 7
For my art project The Blue Pansy, I chose this butterfly because the orange and the dark blue complement each other nicely. I worked with Prismacolor pencils and used different techniques that make it easy for me to blend and make different kinds of texture on the butterfly wings. For my border I used what butterflies love, which is a warm climate, flowers for feasting, leaves to lay their eggs on, and I drew a caterpillar which the butterfly was at one point. The background I used a light pink gradient because the orange and pink give it warm tone spring vibes and the dark blue evens it out.

8th Grade

1st Place

"The Whimsical Trumpeter" by Dessa Haavik at Dumbarton Middle School, Grade 8
For this self-portrait, I decided to express what I think is my true self. I think one of the most difficult things in life is trying to find who you are amid a world of judgement and fear around how you present yourself. Art is a way of speaking your truth; an ability to articulate exactly what you want the world to see, to get people to see a different perspective. My goal for this portrait was to remind people that being yourself is enough, no matter how people may see you. I included the trumpet because playing an instrument is a part of myself that people don't realize when they see who I am on the outside. I love music and playing instruments. The background is the bookshelf in the lobby area of my art studio where I take art classes, another thing that I am passionate about. The expression on my face is whimsical, humorous, and relaxed, which is the tone I want to convey with my drawing. I used contrast for this portrait to make it dynamic and engaging, with the highlights on the trumpet, dark clothing, and shadows in the background.

2nd Place

"The Right Door" by Kiomi Powell at Parkville Middle School, Grade 8
Sometimes in life you find yourself between a choice. The choice of going with the light or staying in the dark. But when there's two lights, which one do you choose?

3rd Place

"Pointillism Animal" by Maya Tedder at Catonsville Middle School, Grade 8
I selected this animal because it really struck out to me as interesting and a challenge to paint. In my painting, I mixed colors together to create different dimensions and definition on the animal. I was trying to show the elegance and fierceness of this animal, and I hope that viewers can see that through the painting. I also hope they see all the different colors used to create shadows and dimension throughout the animal and the background

Best in Show

"Self-portrait" by Rodshi Bari at Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, Grade 8

Honorable Mention

"Self Portrait in Clay" by Michelle Okolo-I at Cockeysville Middle School, Grade 8

Honorable Mention

"Horse Study" by Grace Williams at Loch Raven Technical Academy, Grade 8
I chose to create a horse head for my clay project, while doing this I decided to use a lighter color palette to symbolize elegance, since horses are known for being majestic. This was made with clay and acrylic paint.

Honorable Mention

"The G.O.A.T." by Jack Mcguinn at Catonsville Middle School, Grade 8
The artist Chuck Close was the inspiration for this artwork. He used a grid to create realistic portraits. I used this method to draw my favorite basketball player, Michael Jordan. I used a variety of values when shading, to help create a more realistic portrait. The thing I was surprised by was how much easier it was to draw accurately with a grid.
