Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

A very warm welcome to the new academic year at Oakfield to all our families, especially those who are joining our school for the first time! I hope that you already feel part of our Oakfield community. It has been a pleasure to see so many of you at the beginning and end of the day since term started, as well as at our first Coffee Morning this week.

The staff and I are so impressed with the smooth start that the children have made and how happily they have settled into their new classes (and indeed new school for many of them). Teambuilding activities during the first few days helped to forge new friendships, as well as enable everyone to adjust gradually to the new routines and expectations whilst still having fun! I am incredibly proud of the resilience, cheerfulness and positive attitude that have been so evident in all the chldren from Nursery to Year 6. As always, they showcase our 6Cs in everything they do.

Our younger pupils in Pre Prep are enjoying their newly refurbished Library, Nursery rooms and outdoor area, which represent the very best in Early Years practice, allowing Oakfield to continue to deliver innovative learning and development to support this crucial stage of child development.

The beginning of term has of course been marked by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and we have the opportunity on Monday to spend family time reflecting on her life and the historical significance for our country of a reign of duty and service spanning so many years.

We were delighted to announce in Assembly today the names of our House Captains and School Councillors, who will now begin their period of service to Oakfield, alongside the pupil Heads of School, Librarians, Eco Warriors and all the other children who undertake their duties with such commitment and responsibility.

Wishing you all a peaceful and restful weekend.

SPORT

In afternoon games lessons this term we are primarily focusing on playing netball, football, hockey and gymnastics for both boys and girls. Pictured below are Year 5 boys and girls preparing for their first intra-school matches next Thursday against Rosemead Prep. A big well done particularly to Iris and Juliet for great netball play on Thursday!

Year 1 have been building their fitness and strength by jumping in different directions over items this week in PE with Mr. Heasman and having great fun doing it!

Please note all children in Years 3 - 6 should have both shin pads and gumshields for PE and Games lessons. Gumshields (Boil and Mould) are available from the Oakfield's Sports Department Office by requesting it from the Sports Office and £5 will be added onto your school account.

YEAR 6

In Year 6, we spent some time building towers using sweets and spaghetti! We used problem solving skills such as trial and error, as well as focusing on resilience when things didn't go to plan.

We also played an Escape Room game, trying to break free from a prison. The children worked in groups to solve mathematical clues and logic puzzles in order to find the codes to escape.

YEAR 5

In Science, Year 5 have been learning about why we have night and day on Earth from the comfort of their classroom and STEM room!

Year 5 have also been getting to grips with the new maths resources!

YEAR 4

Year 4 have settled into their classes brilliantly and really got stuck into their team building exercises and getting to grips with their new topics for the term. We look forward to a brilliant Autumn Term ahead.

YEAR 3

Year 3 have begun this term's Forces science topic by investigating the magnetic properties of different materials, and confirming that not all metals are magnetic - which is a relief so as not to have cutlery flying around!

YEAR 2

Year 2 have enjoyed meeting their new class!

They had fun working collaboratively to build London landmarks during our teambuilding days.

There was great communication skills when deciding how best to create their design. Great job Year 2!

The children are also enjoying getting to know the new playground, the amazing equipment and all the the other exciting and fun things on offer on the Prep side.

Our quiet space and eating area allows the children to continue to chat to their fellow Year 1s in a different class.

Miss Duncan and Miss Hanakova are so proud of you all!

YEAR 1

Lots of brilliant team building took place in our first week including building with LEGO, sharing our drawing ideas and making 3D models together out of straws. Good job everyone!

Pre Prep

Some fun and games interacting with the woodland and nature in the new forested area of the Pre-Prep playground!

LOWER FOUNDATION

We have been learning all about the emergence of Autumn and understanding important changes in the natural world which are key characteristics of the new season!

NURSERY

There has been some brilliant play in the newly refurbished indoor and outdoor areas of the Nursery with the children getting to know the new space and getting to know each other by playing together and sharing in a wonderful fashion!

COMPOSER OF THE WEEK

Dear musical wanderers,

This week we are listening to the music of wonderful Benjamin Britten. Britten had an incredibly close relationship with the monarchy, composing music both for Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother (including a secret piece that the Queen commissioned and gave to her mother as a birthday present). We have listened to the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (given narrative here in a lovely animation: https://youtu.be/a7veVFRKkQI), but other works include Cuckoo (https://youtu.be/mYbl9RysfOQ), Playful Pizzicato (which means plucking) (https://youtu.be/LU4fexkx2D8), and the melancholy yet magical Four Sea Interludes (https://youtu.be/ht9mQE6X0C0).

Enjoy this dip into a regal and majestic sonic world,

Mr Howes
