2021 Rewind By: Jackson Williams

January

On January 6, 2021, the US Capitol building was attacked and taken over by Trump supporters. They filled the courtroom and damaged federal property. 5 people died.
Olivia Rodrigo released her hit single “Drivers License” on January 7th.
On January 16, 2021, 3 teens were involved in a fatal car crash on Valparaiso road going down the hill. The car was suspected to be traveling at a very high rate of speed as they hit a pole and flipped the car. Unfortunately, the driver passed away peacefully in the hospital the day later.
On January 20, 2021, President-elect Joe Biden was inaugurated as he out-voted former President Donald Trump in the “controversial” 2020 election.

February

The Sequoia school district revealed their plan to let students back on campus. This didn’t allow all students to come back, but limited it to 25% capacity in the classrooms.
Sports from all seasons returned with many covid protocols working against them. All teams had successful seasons, but unfortunately most teams weren’t allowed to play in the CCS Playoffs due to the pandemic.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the 2021 Super Bowl by a score of 31-9. Tom Brady won his 7th ring and 5th super bowl MVP award.
Trump was impeached for the second time. He was put on trial for the January 6th incident.

March

Asian hate started to circulate the country in areas such as San Francisco and Atlanta. In March, 8 people died from a shooting that occured in Atlanta, Georgia. Three asian spas were targeted.
The Bears football team came back hot after a long time waiting for their first game as they took on Half Moon Bay and won 36-20.

April

Students finally returned to campus after a long year and a half of distance learning in a hybrid model.
The Baylor Bears beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the championship game of the NCAA March Madness Tournament. The tournament made its return as it was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

May

Gas Lines around the country were hacked resulting in a shortage. This created an outrage from some as gas prices started to increase as the supply of gas was limited.
J. Cole released his first album since 2018 with The Off-season. Album included features from Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Morray, Bas, and 6LACK.

June

The class of 2021 were able to graduate in-person. Coach Parks Field was filled with MA graduates and their proud friends and family to celebrate.
Ms. Kennel announced her leave and Mr. Losekoot was announced to take over in her position as Principal.

July

After a record breaking season one, Netflix released season two of Outer Banks which includes star actors Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline.
The Delta variant surged through the country very quickly during the summer. By the end of July it had been detected in all 50 US states.

August

Ye (Kanye) West released his album, Donda, at the end of August. The album had 27 tracks and multiple features from popular artists.
New York’s former governor was accused by multiple women of sexual assault throughout the month of August. He later on resigned.

September

The second big album of the year was from Canadian artist Drake as he dropped Certified Lover Boy. The album had 21 songs with features from Travis Scott, Lil Durk, GIVEON, Jay-Z, 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Future, and Young Thug.
After Republicans wanted to recall California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, the Democrats showed their support by destroying the Republicans in votes.
In California, every year around September, it isn’t an unusual sight to see some smoke in the air or headlines in the news for fires. Various fires spread throughout the state

October

Governor Newsom announced that all student K-12 in California schools will be required to have the COVID-19 vaccine in order to attend school.
After winning their last game of the year, the San Francisco Giants clinched first place in the National League securing their first division win for the first time in 9 years.

November

Kyle Rittenhouse was declared not guilty for the acts he committed at a BLM rally regarding the death of Jacob Blake.
8 people died at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas.
Taylor Swift released the rerecording of her 2012 album Red. With the release of her album came a ten minute version of her hit song, All to Well, along with a short film starring Dylan O’Brien and Sadie Sink.

December

Within the first couple days of December, the new Omicron variant was detected in the Bay Area.
Bears from all grades participated in the annual Canned Food Drive Distribution Day in East Palo Alto. Over 300,000 pounds of food was donated.
On December 30th, a huge Marshall Fire broke out in Boulder, Colorado burning through 6,000 acres. A distribution was destroyed along with a brand new apartment complex and hundreds of homes.
