The College of Staten Island Track & Field program participates in their first meet of the 2022-2023 season on Saturday beginning a pivotal season in the history of the program. Following the departure of Head Coach Andrew Gangemi several weeks ago, Associate Head Coach James Luginsland has assumed the duties of Head Coach heading into the upcoming season. This year's Track & Field roster features many familiar faces from the Cross-Country unit that wrapped up their season in mid-November. The team will also be highlighted by the return of several record-setting athletes and ECC All-Conference honorees from last year's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field squads. In addition to the returning athletes, this year's team will also introduce newcomers to the roster that have the potential to build upon the accolades earned by the program last season.
KEY RETURNERS
Ava Thompson - So. | Staten Island, NY
Thompson returns to Track & Field following ECC Second Team All-Conference honors in the Weight Throw. She also holds the CSI school record in the Weight Throw and Discus. Last season, she earned Rookie of the Year honors from CSI Athletics and was named 2022 CSI Track & Field Player of the Year.
Skylar Pointer - So. | Lockport, NY
After battling injuries throughout last season, Pointer earned Second Team ECC All-Conference honors in the Hammer Throw and finished 6th at the ECC Indoor Track & Field Championship in the Weight Throw. She also holds CSI school records in the Indoor Shot Put, Outdoor Shot Put, and Hammer Throw. To end her freshman campaign, she was named the 2022 CSI Track & Field Rookie of the Year.
Julia Calvo - Jr. | Staten Island, NY
After a solid Cross-Country season, Julia will be a leader for the Dolphins in running events. She holds the school record for the women's 600 and is also a part of record-setting Sprint Medley Relay and 4x400m Relay squads. Calvo ended her sophomore season by being named the CSI Cross-Country Player of the Year
Alexandrea Jackson - So. | Bronx, NY
A figurehead on the CSI relay squads, Jackson returns to the Dolphins as last season's Cross-Country Rookie of the Year. She has contributed greatly on the track, especially to the Dolphins Sprint Medley and 4x400m Relay teams.
Muhammed Qadri - Jr. | Staten Island, NY
One of CSI's most decorated returning runners, Qadri is also one of the most decorated runners in program history. Last season, he broke the record in the 1000m with a time of 2:39.79. He brings a wealth of experience back to the program that the Dolphins will look to build upon this season.
NEWCOMERS
Jazmine Severo - Fr. | Merced, CA
Severo joins the Dolphins Track & Field squad as a highly decorated jumper from her time at Golden Valley (SJ) High School. She finished 8th in the High Jump at the CIF State Track & Field Championship in 2022. She also finished 3rd in the High Jump at the 2022 Arcadia Invitational. A jump specialist, she brings valuable knowledge and jumping experience that will make her a key building block for the CSI Jumps program.
Aryanna Finkelstein - Fr. | East Syracuse, NY
Finkelstein joins the Dolphins out of East Syracuse-Minoa High School and was the 2021 New York State Section 3 Class A Shot Put Champion. She is very versatile in the Throws and will be helping the Dolphins in the Shot Put, Discus, Hammer Throw, and Weight Throw.
Fabiola Jean - Fr. | New City, NY
Jean is an outstanding sprinter out of Clarkstown South High School. Very versatile in sprints, she finished 5th in the 55-Meter Dash at the 2022 Rockland County Championships. She also finished 4th at Section 1 League 1-D Championships in the 100 and 200 Meter Dash. She will look to be a key contributor to the Dolphins this season.
Kevin Hasty - Fr. | Syracuse, NY
Hasty was a 2022 New York State Championship qualifier in the Men's Weight Throw. He finished 3rd in New York State's Section 3 Championship meet and had a personal-best in the Weight Throw of 57 feet, 10 inches in the 25-pound High School Weight Throw. He offers versatility in the Shot Put, Discus, and Hammer as well and will serve as another key building block for the Dolphins' program.
Columbus (Cole) Enslen - Fr. | Cornwall on Hudson, NY
Enslen is a phenomenal two-sport athlete who brings the program versatility across multiple event areas. His focus will be on the Horizontal Jumps, but he will also be a potential contributor to the team's relays. At the 2022 Penn Relays, he ran the 2nd leg of the 4x100m Relay for Trinity Pawling High School. The coaching staff is very much looking forward to seeing how he ultimately contributes to the team in his rookie season.
