LEEMING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL vOLume 1, February 2023

principaL's address

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has been a very smooth start to the school year. Our new Year 7 students have settled in very quickly. It is always exciting to welcome students back to the start of the school year, especially when it is not from behind a mask. Year 7 students spent 3 days of team building and participating on getting to know you activities in their house groups. Feedback from the students has been very positive. We also welcome nine new staff to Leeming.

Our Class of 2022 achieved outstanding results, probably the best results our school has ever achieved. Congratulations to staff and students on amazing results. A snapshot:

  • Median ATAR improved to 85.3 with 87 students sitting ATAR exams.
  • 25 students achieved above 90 and a further 24 achieved between 80 and 90
  • 6 Certificates of Distinction
  • 24 Certificates of Merit
  • 4 subjects in the top 15% of the state (Maths Specialists, Health, Economics, Modern History)
  • Graduation rate improved to 99.4%

Our NAPLAN results remain at or above Like Schools. For full details, please see our annual report which will be published at the end of the term.

Our school P&C is looking for parents and carers to attend meetings twice per term. The P&C raises valuable funds for the school through the operation of the Canteen, Uniform Shop and parent contributions. There is no fundraising.

The role of the P&C is to keep the businesses going and spend the funds on school projects. If you would like these services to continue we need your help. Most elected office bearer positions are filled, they just need numbers for support and to keep a meeting quorum. The next meeting is the AGM, on Wednesday 22 March at 7.00 pm (please bring a gold coin to join). Meetings are held in the Conference Room, which is located next to the Administration building.

I would like to announce that I am leaving Leeming Senior High School for a period of between one and two years. After 12 ½ years as Leeming SHS Principal, I have accepted a secondment that involves helping and supporting principal colleagues with what is a very demanding job. I will retain my substantive position here. The position will be advertised state-wide soon and an acting principal will be appointed. In the meantime, the acting principal will be Mrs C. Geiles. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the staff, students and families for making this amazing school that I have always been very proud to lead. Wishing you all a happy and safe 2023.

Mr B.Wallwork, Principal

TERM 1 STUDENT PLANNER 2023

HASS

Congratulations to our Year 12 2022 HASS superstars

Congratulations to our outgoing Humanities and Social Science Students, who once again excelled in 2022. Year 12 ATAR Geography and History students achieved above the state average and Economics students also attained above Like Schools & State of the likes of Rossmoyne and Willetton. We are also very proud of ATAR Politics and Law student Sophie A, who was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Law Society in recognition of her outstanding performance. Embracing our school ethos of Harmony and Excellence, our students not only enjoyed a wonderful year learning together, they also contributed to our school’s terrific ranking.

Year 12 2022 HASS Superstars

Welcome HASS Students

Our new HASS students have been given a warm welcome and settled in nicely with their teachers, who have an exciting year planned. Adding to our usual HASS lesson fun, we have invited experts in economics, psychology, Aboriginal art and hydrology to extend our students’ understanding of these fascinating areas. Explorations outside the classroom will include field trips to the city, bushland and mine sites, law courts and museums. Excursions to a Careers Expo and Resources Technology Showcase combined with a university tour and workplace learning experiences will also acquaint our students with the many interesting and lucrative HASS careers available to them. A particular student highlight- HASS Week- is also scheduled for Week 10 this term with an exciting array of activities featuring all HASS disciplines.

Welcome new HASS teachers

Mrs T. Beatty and Miss G. Day

Students would already be familiar with Mrs T. Beatty as one of their favourite relief teachers helping out the HASS department last year and will be delighted to see her take on a more regular teaching role with the HASS team. She joins our new teacher Miss G. Day an Ancient History buff who also loves teaching students about the world closer to home, particularly the community they live in. If she is not at school, she can usually be found with her head in a book, practising yoga or baking her famous chocolate chip banana bread. She has already made a most favourable impression on students and teachers alike and, in her turn, has praised the “helpful and welcoming Leeming School Culture.”

Ms R. Murray, HASS Teacher

Library

The Library has had a very busy start to the year with all Year 7s completing a session in the Library as part of their Induction Program and they have all commenced a weekly Digital Literacy session through their HASS class. Attending the Library before school and lunch times is very popular for all year groups and it is great to see a large number of students playing chess.

There are a lot of new books which are out on display as well as a large selection of e-book databases covering a wide range of topics. Information regarding these will be on Connect in the Library Information & Activities.

All of the Clubs that run in the Library have commenced and are open to all students to participate. They are a great way to meet other students and enjoy the Library space and all its resources.

Which Clubs are available for students to join?

There are a lot of different resources, clubs and activities available to students in the Library. They are open to all student year groups and students are welcome to join any club and to participate at any stage.

The Study Smarter session on a Monday afternoon is specifically aimed at helping Year 7 and Year 8 get organised for high school but all students are welcome if they would like a refresher session. Students will learn valuable skills to develop solid study strategies to help them become lifelong learners. Students will set up their diaries as well as learn how a weekly planner can help them to manage their time successfully.

Students gain a lot by finding out their learning style then using this knowledge to become a more efficient learner and how to stay focussed at school.

Students are welcome to come along occasionally when they feel they need to work on some specific skills or on a weekly basis, and use the time as a revision and weekly organisation session while learning a few new study tips.

The Robotics Club is also very popular with students who enjoy working out puzzles and building moving penguins!!

Several students from previous years have continued to attend and are very good mentors for the new members.

There are a lot of students in the Chess Club this year, with a lot of new members keen to play against the older players. Our experienced chess players are very keen to teach new players, so if there are students who are interested in learning chess please come along and join in.

Fresh competition is always welcome as it keeps players on their toes and increases the enjoyment for everyone.

What’s on in the Library this term?

Chaplain's Chat
Chaplain's Chat

This story is about how we can support each other and achieve the same goals by working together creating Teamwork:

We can learn from geese, and put this into our daily lives to achieve more together.

When you see geese flying along in "V" formation, you might consider, what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wing it creates an immedicate uplift for the bird. By flying in "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone — and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same way we are.

When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south. Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

When geese honk from behind it’s like us cheering for someone, giving them encouragement, support.

Finally — and this is important — when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.

If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is up and running once again. Every Wednesday, everyone is welcome to come to the Trade Trading Kitchen (by the Aulberry Parade entry) from 7.30 am. Have a hot drink, a toastie and play some games with your friends. This is a friendly and welcoming space for all students. If you have any questions please contact me.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS - ACTION PLANS

If your child has a medical condition or develops a medical condition for example asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, or epilepsy please inform the school for an Action Plan, if you have not already done this. This is so that the school staff can manage your child’s medical condition appropriately whilst they are at school.

The School Health Service

The school health service aims to promote healthy development and wellbeing to help students reach their full potential. Students are better prepared for learning when they are healthy, safe, and happy. School Health Services provide an easy access point to health care for students. The school health nurse may carry out health assessments and provide information, advice, referrals, and support for students. The support encourages development of knowledge, skills, and behaviour, and encourages the young person to deal with their health issue(s) and make healthy lifestyle choices. Individual students can seek information, guidance and support about a range of issues that may include coping with illness, culture or racism issues, feeling anxious, stressed or unhappy, healthy eating and nutrition, healthy weight and body image, mental health and wellbeing, loss and grief, problems at home, relationships, sexual health, smoking, alcohol, drug use and other adolescent concerns.

There may be times when the school health nurse needs to share information with parents or guardians or certain others in the school community, to provide support and care to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the young person. The school health nurse encourages and supports young people to talk to their parent or guardians about significant health issues.

Ambulance Cover

I strongly advise parents/guardians to have ambulance cover as an ambulance will be called in emergency situations and when deemed necessary. The school DOES NOT pay for this service. The cost of an ambulance in an emergency is approximately $900. The cost of ambulance cover through HBF (agent for St John’s Ambulance), is approximately; Family $98.25 and Singles; $49.10 per year. Please search other private health insurance for ambulance cover.

Medication

Parents and students are reminded that the nurse is NOT allowed to give paracetamol or other medication to students. Students can bring a dose of paracetamol to school to take if needed to have relief pain for headache, period pain, toothache etc.

Updating Contact Details

I look forward to meeting parents and students and wish you all a great term and year.
