Senior Leadership Team Update

Two of the highlights of the week have been visits for students to the University of Nottingham and to Beth Shalom, The National Holocaust Centre.

Our trip to Nottingham was to celebrate and reward those students who have shown commitment to sports clubs and enrichment throughout the year. They took part in a range of different activities and also experienced a day at a top university campus. We hope this will inspire them to show the ambition required over to coming years to make it to university after they finish their studies in the Sixth Form here. Our visit to Beth Shalom was to enhance our Religious Studies and History curriculum. During the day students developed their understanding of the Holocaust and listened to the testimony of a survivor. Thank you to all students who represented us so well.

Our Year 11 examination season is nearly finished which means that Year 10 and 12 examinations start next week. The examination timetable is included here again for your convenience. Please ensure a revision schedule is in place at home. We know that students who take these opportunities seriously benefit significantly when it comes to the final examinations.

Values – Courage & Resilience

The theme of our house assemblies this week was courage and resilience which are two of our core values. Both of these values are so important because they can be seen to underpin and nurture our other values.

As part of the assembly we heard about the story of Bertolt Brecht who was a German playwright and poet. Brecht was medically trained and served in an Army hospital until he realised he wasn't reaching his full potential. He decided theatre was his calling to challenge social and political issues. He wrote plays which were aimed at revolutionising theatre as well as challenging ideas. After challenging Nazi political views in 1930s Germany he was forced to leave the country when Hitler came to power. During his exile he travelled around Sweden, Norway and Switzerland before moving to the United States. He showed courage and resilience by standing up for what he believed and persisted until people listened.

Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale

At the end of every term, we like to celebrate our students in a number of ways. It is important to recognise achievement and students who are displaying our values. We celebrate good attendance and most improved attendance, excellence and improvement in the various subject areas, we award certificates and prizes for demonstrating our values and for an excellent attitude to school.

We are very fortunate to have a wonderful community of staff and students who recognise and value the importance of saying well done and celebrating one another's achievements.

Minerva House Charity

I am currently fundraising for St Barnabas hospice, a Lincolnshire based hospice that provides individuals and families with palliative and end of life care as well as support. I am fundraising within school through a cake sale on 28th June and I am hoping that students could bake or donate cakes for us to sell with all proceeds going to St Barnabas. If you feel you could support this please send in your donations for us to sell on 27th or 28th June. Any donations would be greatly appreciated to fundraise for such an amazing cause! I am also fundraising externally in a charity skydive in memory of my dad who was supported by St Barnabas when he was diagnosed as terminally ill. I have a just giving page at: https://www.justgiving.com/page/erin-lowe-1684744614886 . We will also be holding a stall at KEVI Summer Extravaganza in support of this charity who helped me and my family with such empathy and care. Anything big or small is appreciated when it comes to charity so, please help out if you can. Thank you.

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice

Attention Year 8 & Year 9!

  • What are your future plans & career possibilities?
  • What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
  • Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?
  • What career ideas do you have for the future at the moment?

In year 7, 8 and 9 you will be learning new skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence to help you plan your next steps. This process starts with your careers education in school which will encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You will also start to make some important decisions that could influence your future career path as you will be choosing your subjects to study for GCSE. This process will begin for all Year 9 students early next year.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance for the last week was 91.3%. This is an improvement on the same time last year and makes our whole school year to date 91.1%.

Please support your child to have excellent attendance between now and the end of the school year. During the final weeks there are lots of important foundations put in place for future years through assessments and responsive teaching. Every day counts, especially at this time of year!

If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance or need any support with attendance, then please contact Mrs Kwee on 01790 753 260 or tkwee@kingedwardacademy.co.uk to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

Mr A Carrington - Vice Principal

A parent from a Sleaford school handed the police five vapes they had found in their child’s bedroom. The police have had these five vapes analysed. One of the vapes had only two substances in it: antifreeze and hydraulic oil – no nicotine. The nine most concerning chemicals found within the five vapes are listed below.

Velvana Fridex Eco - modern non-toxic coolant intended for the cooling system of cast iron and all-aluminium engines.

AVANTI cooler antifreeze - antifreeze for all engines with an anticorrosion additive.

STEOL M - classified as a flammable hazardous substance, designed for filling hydraulic devices. A mixture of distilled premium grade glycerin, distilled water with a chloride concentration of no more than 0.02 mg / dm3, rectified ethyl alcohol and anti-corrosion additives.

Rauvolfia serpentina - the Indian snakeroot, devil pepper, or serpentine wood, is a species of flower in the milkweed family Apocynaceae. Side effects can range from mild to serious and include nasal congestion, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness, convulsions, Parkinson's-like symptoms, and coma. Indian snakeroot can slow reaction times and should not be used when driving or operating heavy machinery.

AGIP antifreeze - engine coolant based on propylene glycol.

Trichloroethylene - a halocarbon used primarily to make refrigerants and as an industrial solvent. Classified as carcinogenic to humans. The use of trichloroethylene in the food and pharmaceutical industries has been banned in much of the world since the 1970s due to concerns about its toxicity.

1-methoxy-2-propanol - poster and water colour varnish.

Diethylene Glycol Diacetate - used in antifreeze, brake fluids, lubricants, and other commercially available products.

2-methoxyethyl acetate - this substance may damage fertility and may damage the unborn child, is harmful if swallowed, is harmful in contact with skin and is harmful if inhaled

The above list is not exhaustive, just the items of most concern. As you can see, they include toxic, flammable, carcinogenic and poisonous substances. Vapes which are not purchased from a reliable, regulated supplier are not subject to any of the usual controls. Unfortunately, because students under 18 are not able to buy from regulated suppliers, they are much more likely to purchase a vape containing harmful substances, such as those listed above.

We are sharing this information with you as we are concerned about the young people in our school community. As part of our personal development curriculum, students have had vaping workshops, form time discussions on vaping and, depending on their age, they may have had personal development lessons on the topic too. Despite this, we are seeing an increase in students vaping in town and wish to share these concerns so that you are empowered to discuss these topics with your child. We are also continuing to support the police in their monitoring of the illegal supply of e-cigarettes to under-age children.

Please have an open conversation with your children about this information whether you believe them to be currently vaping or not. The police would welcome any confiscated vapes for analysis and please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child’s form tutor or Head of Year if you would like support or have further information. If your child is worried about addiction and would like to seek help in managing this, please do get in touch and they will be referred to our student support team.

Teen Support

Many students suffer with some form of mental illness, there are often many things you can do to support yourself.

Studies have shown that 30 minutes of cardio exercise, three or more times a week, reduces anxious and depressive symptoms up to 70 percent. Kids think more clearly, are more mindful, and sleep better after workouts because they discharge tension stored in their bodies.

These do not have to be difficult nor do they require any equipment.

  • Brisk walking.
  • Running.
  • Jogging or jogging in place.
  • Burpees.
  • Bear crawls.
  • Swimming.
  • Water aerobics.
  • Cycling

Mental well-being does not have a single universal definition, but it does encompass factors such as:

The sense of feeling good about ourselves and being able to function well individually or in relationships

The ability to deal with the ups and downs of life, such as coping with challenges and making the most of opportunities

The feeling of connection to our community and surroundings

Having control and freedom over our lives

Having a sense of purpose and feeling valued

Of course, mental well-being does not mean being happy all the time, and it does not mean that you won’t experience negative or painful emotions, such as grief, loss, or failure, which are a part of normal life. However, whatever your age, being physically active can help you to lead a mentally healthier life and can improve your well-being.

Word of the Week: Plethora

Plethora: abstract noun – a large amount of something; an excessive amount.

Origin - Greek: plethein – full

The plethora of coins he had collected took up an entire cupboard.

There were a plethora of reasons to celebrate.

I had to remember a plethora of facts before my examinations.

Maths

Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.

At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.

Week commencing 19/06/2023 - we will be chanting our 6 times table.
