Artist Statement

Mr. Dongpo Huang uses brush and ink techniques in pursuit of a spiritual connection with nature. He began this practice in the 1970’s. After arriving in the United States from Guangzhou, China in 1997, he was able to fully dedicate himself to practicing calligraphy.

“With calligraphy I am able to practice integrating mind, body, and spiritual health. It also allows me to promote traditional Chinese culture.” – Mr. Huang

The styles of scripts that he works with are Lishu (clerical script), Kaishu (regular script), Xingshu (running script), Xingcao (running-cursive script), and Caoshu (cursive)

About the Artist

Mr. Huang graduated from Guangzhou Athletes College in Guangzhou, China in 1963. He taught at the Youth Amateur Athletic School and worked as an instructor and coach for middle and high schools for 33 years. He immigrated to the US in 1997.

Since moving to the U.S., Mr. Huang has been active in civic and community activities. He is well-known in Austin for promoting Chinese culture with enthusiasm. He has instructed classes in calligraphy and Tai-Chi in colleges, high schools, elementary schools, companies, civic clubs, and the Asian American Resource Center.

Mr. Huang established the Austin Chinese Retirement Association and served as its first president in 1999. The association serves as a platform for bridging Chinese elders to US culture by providing new immigrants with assistance and social engagement. In 2008, Mr. Huang was given the Honorary Citizen award by the mayor of Austin. Mr. Huang is a recipient of AARC’s 2020 Heritage Artist Laureate award.
