Midland Public Schools District Vision Statement: Lead with respect, trust and courage. Ensure an equitable, collaborative and inclusive culture. Enable all to achieve success.

March is National Social Work Month! Thank you to all of our MPS Social Workers for the great work that you do in our district!

In early March, all DK-5th grade teachers and elementary media centers received a wonderful donation of the picture book, The Kindest Red. A heartfelt thank you to the Islamic Center of Midland for sharing their love of literacy with our elementary students. Through this book, students have the opportunity to see the power of friendship and kindness. This multicultural book is filled with optimism and hope! As IB-PYP World Schools, our elementary students work to build intercultural understanding and respect. As a way to build international- mindedness within our students, we embrace different cultures, traditions and celebrations.

February was National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, and to highlight the CTE programs available at MPS, students from CTE classes spoke about their experiences at our Parent Information Committee meeting on March 8th! This week, we highlight the Engineering Program

MPS courses offered in Engineering:

  • Introduction to Engineering Design
  • Principles of Engineering
  • Engineering Capstone

Featured Students:

Abigail Good (Junior), DHS; Chris Ramos (Sophomore) - DHS; Craig Hurst (Sophomore) - MHS; Alexander Horton (Sophomore) - MHS

When asked how the Engineering program has made an impact on their education, Abigail, Chris, Craig, and Alexander responded:

“It advances my skills and prepares me for the real world on how a workplace would operate. We’ve learned how to work together in groups and how to benefit from that as well as following a design process. We also use the engineering design process and learn skills that will benefit us in the workplace such as technical writing and how to make professional connections with people outside of the school system and how to use our resources to advance our work.”- Abigail Good

“I’ve learned a lot from the engineering program! I’ve learned how to use CAD to create objects and how to design things efficiently and when I see something online that I want but don’t really want to pay for it, I can create my own version in a unique way by designing it in 3D modeling. I’d say its a really good experience for anyone who has any interest in the field, and it's an easy way to get familiar with the basics.”- Chris Ramos

“A lot of what we do in the program, aside from just learning about basic engineering, mechanical, electrical, and programming, we do a lot of teamwork and team bonding as well as building leadership skills. We also learn a lot of general workforce things that are applicable to almost every single job. How to go out and interview a professional about what they do, and their job, and we’ve learned about how to conduct presentations in front of large groups of people. Just learning the basics of every single engineering degree and how to tie them all into any field that you could go into. It’s just a very good class to prepare you for the real world.” - Craig Hurst

“The program that I’m in is the Engineering program with Mr. Spurling. In the program, we learn about the various types of engineering and the engineering process. The class is fun and the reason is that we have many hands-on projects and it's not like a traditional high school course. It’s based on building and designing things of various types.” - Alexander Horton

Thanks, Abigail, Chris, Craig, and Alexander, and keep up the great work!

Here are some more great things happening around our District!

Back-to-back history-making champs! The Great Lakes Warriors 2.0 from Siebert Elementary won back-to-back Battle of the Books championships! The finals of the event, put on by the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library, were held last Thursday, March 2. The team won this event last year as fourth graders and again this year as fifth graders. In the 45 years that the library has held this competition, this is only the second time that a team has won two years in a row. Members of the Great Lakes Warriors 2.0 include Brynn Blaha, Kevin Corle, Emmeline Grunder, Blake Macfarlane, Owen Nash and Rachel Rickard. These students used dedication, hard work and a love of reading to motivate them in their study of the ten battle books with team manager Erin Corle. Congrats to these Siebert Bulldogs on another great season!
Congratulations to Midland High School's Wrestling Program for a phenomenal season! 5 Chemic Wrestlers traveled down to Detroit to compete at the MHSAA State Finals at Ford Field March 3-4, 2023. Austin Anderson and Cole Schelb fought hard against tough competition but fell short of returning to the podium by one match. Cole ends his career with 151 victories and our program's first 3-time state qualifier. Halle Spears, Morgan Ludwig, and Arden Eschtruth all brought home All-State medals. Halle Spears came in ranked 12th in the State. She would have 4 straight wins over some of the State's best to finish in 4th place. Morgan Ludwig made a return to the podium, after losing a very hard-fought quarterfinal. Morgan went 2-1 in her next 3 matches to finish 7th. This is her 2nd career All State finish. Arden Eschtruth cemented herself as the Best Girls Wrestler in Midland High history. Arden won her first 2 matches to go to the MHSAA State Semifinals. Arden would have 2 more wins, including a pin in her final match, to claim 3rd place. Arden finishes her career as a 3-time All State Wrestler. Great Job Chemic Wrestlers! (pictured: Halle Spears, Morgan Ludwig, and Arden Eschtruth)
Congratulations to Mr. Zimmer and Jefferson's MathCounts Team! The team competed at the MathCounts Competition at SVSU and took 1st place! This qualified our students for the state competition on March 11th. Of the top 10 overall finishers, eight students were from Jefferson, led by Katie Cai, who took 1st place, followed closely by David Han. The team has met twice a week after school for the last five months in preparation for this competition. When you see Mr. Zimmer, please congratulate him and his team. Their hard work paid off. Thank you, Mr. Zimmer, for providing this opportunity for our students.
Congratulations to Dow High DECA for achieving the Thrive Membership Campaign Award for 2023! Just like in business, continued growth is one of the keys to success. Making the DECA experience available to as many students as possible is always the goal of the Dow High DECA Officers. In an effort to reach their membership goal, the officers met with incoming freshmen, gave presentations in business classes, and created an advertising campaign. The officers were able to increase membership from 128 Members in 2021-22 to 168 in 2022-2023! Featured in the photo are the 2022-2023 DECA Officers - Danny Safadi, James Toole, Logan Yu, Evelyn Johnson, Ellie Senkowski, Alex Price and Temi Oshin. Great work, Chargers!
Central Park Explorers were immersed in a variety of stations last week to celebrate the 120th day of school. With the help of volunteers, first grade students counted, sorted, created, crafted, built and ate their way to 120! Such a fun and interactive experience for all!
Jefferson 7th grade English classes had the opportunity to visit the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio in February, and were able to spend their time observing their surroundings, then complete a creative writing piece inspired by their visit!
