Johnston Community Primary School January 6th 2023

Dear Families,

I hope that you have enjoyed the Christmas break! We look forward to welcoming pupils back to school on Monday 9th January. We do not have any inset days planned this term.

What are we learning about this term?

This term, all of our learning in school links to Cynefin which refers to the local area and Wales. Pupils across the school are going to be learning about everything from Johnston Village to Owain Glyndwr and The Senedd. We were aiming to hold a museum exhibition of learning at the end of the Autumn term but unfortunately, our diary was so busy, this became impossible. Instead, we have decided to move our museum to the end of this half term. We look forward to sharing the amazing achievements of our pupils.

A few reminders:

  1. Uniform. As ever, it is important that we maintain high standards of uniform. If you would like to replenish any items, pop and see Mrs. Greenish at our school desk. We have lots of second hand uniform which we are able to sell for just 50p!

2.Attendance. During the last few weeks of term, school attendance was impacted significantly. We need to work hard this term to improve. Challenge: If the whole school is able to achieve 100% for the first four days back, I will negotiate a very special prize with our school prefects on Friday 13th January.

3. P.E. - During the winter, P.E. sessions outdoors can become a little hit and miss. Therefore, occasionally we will move P.E. to an alternative day. (Class teachers will provide updates)

4.School Meals. A reminder that all children from full time nursery to year two are provided with a free school meal.

Headteacher's Coffee Morning

We will be holding our first Headteacher's Coffee Morning of the year next week.

Please note the confirmed date of Monday 16th January at 9:00am – straight after drop off. It will be held in the school hall.

This will be an informal opportunity to have a cup of coffee/tea and hear from Mr. Williams and discuss where we are as a school, and where we would like to go next.

Please Read This Important Information about Free School Meals.

It is vitally important that any parents who qualify for Free School Meals Register.

Schools receive additional money based upon the number of pupils who are in receipt of free school meals. This money is used to provide additional staffing to support pupils.

Despite the fact that Welsh Government is rolling out universal free school meals, we still need parents to register for free schools meals to qualify for additional funding support.

A pupil may be able to get free school meals if their parent or guardian gets any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Guarantee element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided the parent isn’t entitled to Working Tax Credit and has an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after a claimant stops qualifying for Working Tax Credit to 31 March 2019, Universal Credit 1 from 1 April 2019, Universal Credit, provided the household has an annualised net earned income of no more than £7,400 (as assessed by earnings from up to three of their most recent assessment periods).
  • Pupils who receive Income-related Employment and Support Allowance,
  • Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance in their own right could also be able to receive free school meals.

For children/young people to be eligible to receive free school meals:

  • the parent (or child/young person) must be in receipt of the relevant benefit or support payment
  • an application for free school meals should have been submitted to the local authority
  • the application should have been approved, or documents should have been seen that strongly indicate eligibility.

You can apply by visiting Pembrokeshire County Council Website, or by calling into school.

If you think that you may qualify and you would like support or information, please call into our school office. Mrs. Greenish and the school admin team will be happy to help.
