The Blast City Manager Holstine's Weekly Update | July 12, 2023

New Brisbane Authors Lending Library and Brisbane Authors Collection

If you happen to walk on the 400 block of Sierra Point Rd., you may have noticed a nicely-crafted wooden structure sitting atop the fence outside 421 Sierra Point Rd. This little structure is actually a lending library that Brisbane resident Sheridan Oakes has set up for Brisbane authors to share their work with their neighbors.

If you like to read, this is the place to find a good book, pamphlet, short story, or poems by local authors. Just be sure to return them when you're done!

Just 0.5 miles away in the Brisbane Library is a shelf that houses a portion of the Brisbane Authors Collection (books wider than 7" can't fit behind the glass and can be found at City Hall). Sheridan donated his book, Tomb on the Hill, to the Collection earlier this week.

If you are a Brisbane resident and would like to donate your published works to be added to the Collection, please contact history@brisbaneca.org.

So now you know where you can find local works by your fellow neighbors. Ones that you can take home and read from Sheridan's lending library, and ones you can read while at the Brisbane Library. Please see Library staff if you would like to look at any of the books for reference!

Last Friday's Vegetation Fire

On Friday, July 7, just after 4pm, North County Fire Authority along with CAL FIRE CZU (San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit), Brisbane Engine 81, San Bruno Fire, South San Francisco Fire, and Daly City Fire Department, responded to Brisbane's incident at 100 W. Hill Drive.

The first arriving fire company on scene reported a large spot of grass burning at a slow rate of spread up slope and with the wind pushing the fire.
Additional fire companies arrived and deployed an aggressive fire attack with hose lays stopping the spread at approximately 4 acres of vegetation. Fire companies were able to get hose lines around the fire, complete direct line construction, including mop up and overhaul fully containing the incident in about 4 hours. In the photo above, San Bruno Fire can be seen rushing down Valley Dr.
We thank them all for their quick action, as well as the firefighters who continued to check the scene periodically through the evening to ensure there weren't any flare-ups. The cause of the fire is under investigation by North County Fire Authority's Fire Prevention Services Division, Investigation Section.
There were no structures threatened or private property damaged nor any evacuation warnings or orders necessary, due in large part to the Dnata employees such as Bobby who quickly called it in.

The North County Fire Authority reminds all residents to cut down and remove all dry vegetation around homes and businesses.

North County Fire Authority reminds everyone to create a defensible space. Defending your home or property from wildfire is within your full control. And it's your responsibility! Check out this great resource from NCFA, My Personal Wildland Fire Action Guide.

In case you're interested, fire severity zone mapping is found on the CAL FIRE website, which has now been embedded onto the City's website for convenience. Just head to brisbaneca.org/fire to enter an address that's important to you; you'll be able to see if it falls in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Note: for Brisbane, we are located near a moderate or "yellow" zone due to San Bruno Mountain being in close proximity.

And lastly, here's a North County Fire Authority Overview Video produced by the Communications Team, going over the main responsibilities and highlights of NCFA.

Going to be a Warm Weekend Ahead

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), our cool summer appears to be ending as a heat wave is expected to come through much of the Bay Area this weekend. The rise in temperatures is part of a high-pressure system coming from the southwest desert of Texas and will make its way to the Bay Area near the end of the week. The NWS issued an excessive heat watch, which begins around 11am Friday, July 14, and will continue to be monitored through the weekend until 8pm Sunday, July 16th. Brisbane, San Francisco, Daly City, and the surrounding area should be cooler in the 70s, but if you plan to travel outside of the area, please be aware of warming temperatures. County residents looking to go outside and hike this weekend should be aware that the higher the terrain, the hotter it will be. See more Extreme Heat Safety Guidelines here from the County Executive's Office.

Crocker Park Resurfacing Update

The contractor is making good progress, but isn't quite done yet with the section between Cypress Ln. and N. Hill Drive. But here is a photo taken on Monday and one taken earlier today:

You can see how the crusher fines, which is similar to decomposed granite, were smoothed out and compacted on the trail, which now also has headerboard outlining the widened path. The contractor is returning to put the last bit of material on top to get it to finish grade. Thanks for your patience as this resurfacing work is underway, with completion estimated to be in the Fall.
