The Brixham Pirate Festival 2018 Secret Shutter Photography

It's that time of year again!

The flags and balloons are out

It's that time of year again, when all of the pirates come to march on the little fishing town of Brixham in Devon

There are many different kinds of pirates...

No two pirates are ever alike. Some pirates are scary, some pirates are funny, some pirates are quirky and some pirates are romantic. But without a doubt they are a great bunch and they are all full of fun!

Some pirates may seem reserved?

But don't be fooled!

Some pirates carry weapons...

And they know how to use them

Looking down the barrel

Some pirates love new technology!

A pirate on his phone

Some pirates like to have a laugh!

Having fun down by the harbour
What's hiding behind that smile?

Some pirates love big hats

But one thing is for sure, they all love a great parade!

The mayoress takes instruction on how to cut the ribbon with a sword. This signals the opening of the parade.

Going...

Sword at the ready

Going...

Nearly there

Gone... the festival is declared open!

With the festival open the parade begins!

There are normally two parades during the pirates' festival. These usually start at around 10.00am. The pirates walk through Brixham's main shopping street along with different acts and bands.

Bright cheery colours

Some pirates like to play with fire!Towering head and shoulders above the other pirates in the parade a pirate swings balls of fire while balancing on stilts. This looked so scary but incredibly he managed his balancing act perfectly.

Playing with fire
That looks hot
Taking a closer look

As the fire people lead more pirates follow

The parade is a really spectacular sight! Everyone really enters into the spirit of things and the atmosphere is great!

A face in the crowd
Great hat!
Love the hair colour!

Without A doubt the streets were packed with some wonderful characters

Here comes the King!

Among the crowd the king was found and a right regal chap he was too!

Until...

He was taken by surprise!

Some pirates are on the right side of the law and very well respected

While for others a different fate awaits!

Stars from last year

It was really great to see some faces from last year and here's a few that were captured on film from last year. If you would like to see the images and commentary from last year then please visit:

Good old Pugwash captain (see below) he came back to visit again this year!

Gorgeous handmade costumes

And who can forget...

Our very own highwayman from last year making another appearance this year.

Highwayman

Eyeing up the enemy

At first there is an exchange of words

He's got a big gun!

Not as big As theirs though!

Serious firepower

Soon the pirates attack

A wet pirate pulls himself out out of the water

Soaked after a plunge off the ship

Winning!

Jumping aboard
Ready for action

Meanwhile back on land

Back on land the battle continued.

Two pirates battle it out
Ouch!

Even the ladies join in!

Among the fighting, more gunfire

Altogether now
Crossing swords
Down you go!
Going in for the kill

With all the weaponry and fighting there had to be the inevitable casualties

A dead pirate
Dead and not having fun

For those not already dead they are soon finished off!

Finishing the job

After all that fighting what could be better than some good food and drink!

I don't know what he was drinking but it certainly put a smile on his face!

I'll have what he's having
Fancy a pint?
Tasty beefburgers
tasty fresh produce

No money for food? No problem! Make your own!

After all that drinking make sure you don't end up in the stocks!

Some Pirates like to play cards

The magician has some amazing card tricks! He nails it every time! Lots of fun!

Some pirates like to sing!

Putting out a belter
Making music
Keeping the beat

Some pirates like bright colours

Who??
Pretty things

Don't forget our feathered friends!

Loving this little guy's outfit!
Who's a pretty boy then?

Some pirates just love their shades

Look really carefully and you will see an image in this lady's shades. Wonder who it is?

Cool reflection

Now you see me

A cool pirate without his sunglasses

Now you don't

A cool pirate with his sunglasses
Liking the bottles

Some pirates are just old romantics

Some pirates are just good mates

Friends together
Friends together

And some pirates are just plain hard

Great scars!
Your money or your life

Some pirates just need their 'grog'!

Thanks mum!

Papping the paps

From a photography perspective some of the snappers had some awesome firepower this year with some massive lenses (not that I'm jealous or anything 😉) here's a shot of what it takes to get that perfect shot!

The 'Rogues Gallery'

One thing that makes me sad about the annual Pirates' Festival is that I can't photograph everyone (although I'd honestly love to). If I missed you this year don't worry hopefully I'll catch you next year. But for those who haven't already seen themselves here's a few more images that I've put together into a 'rogues gallery'. Are you there? If not please keep checking back using this link as I will be constantly adding more images here over the coming weeks. There's always a couple of good ones I have often missed, then I find again when clearing out my memory cards.

Don't forget this section will be continually updated

But just before we go there's one last thing that I bet you didn't know and that is some pirates have a creative side! Yes really! Look who I spotted on the way home!

And finally Some pirates love being creative!

Guess who made this?

A beautiful stone sculpture

Takes patience and a steady hand

Here he is
