TV SHOWS
The Rebellion staff chooses “Stranger Things” as the number one favorite of the decade. “Stranger Things” takes place in the 80s and fol-lows three kids who go on a mission to find their missing friend, but they find much more than they were expecting. The show stars Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolf-hard, along with many more young actors and actress-es. The show came out in 2016 on Netflix and became popular with many teenagers due to its suspense and uniqueness in plot. The show gets inspiration from 80s pop culture, evoking nostalgia in viewers. Many songs have come back into popularity after being on the show, such as “Africa” by Toto. The show will be coming out with a fourth season in 2020.
"Normally I don’t love Sci-Fi shows, but for Stranger Things, I was hooked after the first episode.” - Grace Manzo, staff writer
Fashion
The most popular fashion trend of the decade was high waisted pants. By far, women love the trend because of its comfort, style and ver-satility. Leggings, jeans, shorts and dress pants can all be worn high waisted. They coincide with another popu-lar trend—crop tops—and can be worn together for a more trendy look. The 90s revival look is both flattering and timeless. They can be found anywhere, from current pop-ular stores such as Urban Outfitters, to thrift stores like Sav-ers. They go with a large range of styles from edgy to sophis-ticated, and anyone can find the perfect pair for their closet.
Cultural Movements
The decade has produced many cultural movements that brought people together through marches, hashtags, protests, videos and more. The Rebellion voted that the best cultural movement of the decade is Boston Strong. Boston Strong was created after the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013. Boston Strong is a slogan that people used all over social media to show their support for the victims and families affected. Not only did Boston come together, but the rest of the country also supported Boston through donations and various ways of showing support. Despite the extreme loss and terror the bombing created, Boston remained strong and joined together to support each other, and the movement will be remembered as a empowered time in Boston’s history.
“It felt really close to home since our parents and schools encouraged us to get involved and show support for Boston.” - Danielle Abril, Opinion Editor
Technology
The Rebellion staff selects the iPhone as their favorite technological advancement during the decade. Though the original iPhone came out in 2007, Ap-ple has been producing new versions of the iPhone throughout the decade. The latest version is the iPhone 11 Pro, with three cameras and 5.80-inch touchscreen display. Over 100 million people in the U.S. are iPhone users, and the technology has become popular due to its sleek aesthetic. Many people find them easy to use and have many helpful features, like Siri and iMessage. All Apple prod-ucts can be connected to the same iCloud, which allows families to share the Ap-ple Store purchases and data storage without having the same Apple ID.
“The iPhone is so useful that people have become very dependent on it.” - Greg Tsougas, staff writer
Movies
The students enjoy a variety of movies made throughout the decade; however, the movie A Star is Born is by far the most popular. A Star is Born stars Lady Gaga as Ally, a struggling artist, and Bradley Cooper as Jackson, a star mu-sician. The movie explores the love story within the music industry between the two characters, as Jackson helps build up Ally’s career. The film received great reviews from both fans and crit-ics, scoring a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also pro-duced the hit song “Shallow,” which won a range of awards, including Best Original Song at the Oscars. Fans adore the movie because it showcases a new side for Lady Gaga, while also being an emotional rollercoaster of a movie.
Artists
The Rebellion’s favorite artist of the decade is Taylor Swift. Swift was discovered as a teenager, and rose to fame quickly. She has produced seven albums and won 10 Grammys, and her music ranges from country to pop. Her latest album, Lover, was released Aug. 23, 2019. She plans to tour at two locations—Los Ange-les, CA and Foxboro, MA—during the summer of 2020. Fans love Swift because of her down-to-earth personality, along with her iconic lyrics and voice. She is famously charitable, donating money to fans to help with medical expenses and student loans. Her songs touch on a range of emo-tions and life experiences she has had. Because of this, she holds a huge fanbase, including men and women of all different ages and backgrounds.
