What was the Shang Dynasty?

The Shang King, Cheng Tang defeated King Jie of the Xia Dynasty to begin the Shang Dynasty. The Shang family took over some of the cities along the Huang He. They ruled the area around the North China plain. The Shang dynasty was structured with nobles at the top and peasants at the bottom. They used horse drawn chariots to defend themselves. The Shang dynasty was the second dynasty of China following the Xia dynasty which lasted from 2700-1600 BC. The Shang dynasty lasted from 1600-1046 BC before it was overthrown by the Zhou Dynasty.

The Shang dynasty had control over cities because of their cultural advantages such as bronze casting, the calendar, religious rituals, and writing.
They were the first people of China to develop writing with over 2000 symbols in their system. Their original symbols were images representing objects. Writing in China has barely changed since the Shang dynasty.
They were known for making jewelry, tools, parts of chariots, and weapons from bronze. The long period of time during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties was known as the Bronze Age.
They also developed the calendar with 12 months and 30 days in each month. In leap years, they had 13 months. This was what their calendar looked like.
The Shang dynasty was taken over by the Zhou dynasty because people were not happy under the rule of the Shang king so they began to switch sides. This made the Shang King give up and commit suicide. He did this by locking himself in his palace and setting the room on fire.
