ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award
Janie Marcus from Pomona Pitzer has been named the 2023 ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award winner.
Marcus has been a leader on the court and off since the moment she stepped foot on our campus.
Everyday you see Marcus on a court, you will see no one more excited to hit tennis balls, work on her game, and build up her teammates around her. Her infectious love for tennis, relentless positivity, and everyday fight has helped turn the Pomona Pitzer program into where they are headed today. She is the type of selfless leader and player that every coach would love to have.
On the court, Marcus has been a steady contributor in the Pomona Pitzer lineup which has been one of the top programs in the country over the past few seasons.
Off the court she has made just as big of an impact in the community. Having graduated with distinction as a politics major, Marcus serves as a SAAC member at Pomona Pitzer and in 2020 took part in the ICC Community Impact Fellowship which works with helping campuses work against anti-semitism on college campuses.
She has also worked at the mayor's office in the City of Los Angeles, and in 2021, took part in the Birthright Excel Fellowship in Israel which aimed to build communities, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Marcus's impact on Pomona Pitzer and the surrounding community is sure to be felt for years to come.
