Parkside Primary News Week ending: Friday 6th January 2023

HAPPY NEW YEAR

We hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break. It has been lovely to see all of the children back this week. There are lots of exciting activities and learning opportunities planned for this term and beyond; we look forward to sharing photos in future newsletters.

YOUNG VOICES

A group of children travelled to Sheffield Arena last night to take part in the Young Voices concert. They have been practising the songs at the weekly club and were excited to perform as part of largest children’s choir concerts in the world, alongside superstar Heather Small! They all did Parkside proud with their energy and enthusiasm. A big thank you to all of the staff that helped to make it happen for the children and giving them an experience they will always remember.

UNIFORM & CLOTHING RECYCLING

On the last Monday of each month we are going to be offering a session where used uniform and clothes can be shared. The first event will be on 3.15 – 3.45pm on Monday 30th January.

If anyone has any uniform or clothes (we particularly need hats, scarves, gloves, coats, shoes, trousers, shorts, dresses, jumpers) that could please be donated over January – please place them in the donation tubs in the outside classroom shelter.

TESCO COMMUNITY GRANT

Just a reminder that our project will be put forward to a customer vote in Goole Tesco as part of the Tesco Community Grants Scheme. Voting will commence in store from mid January and continue until the end of March 2023, so look out for it coming soon!

Please vote for us using the blue tokens offered at checkout - if we get the most votes we could receive £1500!

Our project is titled 'Parkside Wild About Learning' as we hope to purchase wellington boots, waterproofs and equipment so that outdoor learning in our fabulous Wilderness Area can be enjoyed by the children all year round.

NO SCHOOL CROSSING PATROL

Please note that Mrs Gunther, the school crossing patrol, will be absent for most of January. Take extra care when using the zebra crossing at these times. This is however still the safest place to cross Western Road, so please continue to use it.

REMINDER: YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL MEETING

This is a reminder for Year 4 parents about the meeting on Tuesday 10th January 2023 at 5.30pm in the West Hall regarding the residential trip in July. A representative from The Bushcraft Company will be there to explain in more detail what is planned for the trip. You will find out about the amenities available at the centre, what to pack, menu plans, accommodation details and a sneak peek at the activities your child will be involved in.

Children are more than welcome to attend the evening as well. If you cannot attend, the presentation will be placed on the School Jotter.

INTRA-SCHOOL SPORTS EVENTS

Today we held the first of our intra-school sports competitions within school. These events will provide the children with the opportunity to participate in a structured sport competition and build on the Superstar qualities and the key quality their year group has been focusing on in the 'My Personal Best' assemblies. The competitions will also help towards Parkside being awarded our School Games Mark, which is a Government led award scheme that rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

The plan is for us to have an intra-school competition between house teams within year groups on the first Friday of every half term after the holidays. Children should come to school in their PE kits for these events.

FAMILY BRAIN TEASER

Last week's answer: How many gifts did 'my true love give to me' in total in the 12 days of Christmas sing? Answer: 364 - nearly one for every day of the year! The number of gifts given each day follows an interesting mathematical pattern. The sequence they go up in (1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, …) are known as triangular numbers. Find out more about the maths behind the song by clicking here
