Nursery class Autumn term 2 2022

After October half term the children in nursery returned happy and ready for the busy term ahead, and what a busy one it had been.
The half term got off to a spooky start when Wilma Witch sent a message asking us to build a house for her.
The children were excited and began to plan what resources they might use.
Some children decided to use wooden bricks, some chose to build a house using sand, whilst other used cardboard boxes and PVA glue to fix them together.
Look at all these wonderful designs.
We celebrated World Nursery Rhyme Week by learning a new nursery rhyme each day and engaging in activities linked to each rhyme.
Nursery rhymes are incredibly important in the Early Years as they help children to develop their speaking and listening skills.
Nursery children and families participated in a daily Nursery rhyme quiz on SEESAW. Families worked together using the clues to discover a familiar nursery rhyme.
Can you remember which rhyme this is? It is a firm favourite with this year's nursery cohort.
The children created poppies using their hand prints. On the 11th November at 11am we observed a 2minutes silence by watching 'Poppies' on Cbeebies.
Who was this creature and where did it go? The children searched the nursery with magnifying glasses and found lots of clues.
We discovered crumbs on the floor so the children reached the conclusion that it must be the Gingerbread man. But we could not find him anywhere? Did you spot him at all?
Shock news just in! Mrs Travis was found with crumbs in her pocket. She then confessed to actually eating the gingerbread man.
Demonstrating our school value 'kindness', we participated in the Rudolph run and raised money for Barnsley Hospice.
The children worked hard to create a bauble for the Christmas tree festival. This year we were inspired by Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.
Here is our tree on display in Santa's grotto.
We hope that you like your child's calendar, bauble and card that they created. Each calendar is unique to your child as they chose which resources / colours they wanted to decorate the numbers using.
When creating their Christmas card, the children used spray bottles with paint in. This activity helped them to build up strength in their fingers whilst creating a wonderful affect on the paper. Your child then cut out their tree and used glue to stick it on the card.
Our key story this half term was 'Dear Santa' by Rod Campbell. This story contained the familiar rhythmic pattern and repetitive phrases as 'Dear Zoo' which the children learnt in Autumn term 1.
Nursery children have learnt to retell this story using Makaton signs and words.

Honey Bunny and Lorna Lamb

Thank you to all families who have taken such great care of Lorna Lamb and Honey Bunny so far. They have been read wonderful stories, taken on walks to see new things and, and taught how to keep their teeth nice and clean. The photographs from SEESAW have been collated to create a scrap book that children enjoy sharing in class. Honey Bunny and Lorna look forward to many more adventures in the new year.
After Christmas we look forward to welcoming new children in our nursery. We know that the older children will be excellent role models when helping the new starters settle into class.
Our World
The curriculum driver for the next half term is Geography, children in nursery will:
Continue to develop positive attitudes about the differences between people.
Know that there are different countries in the world and talk about the differences they have experienced or seen in photos
Adults will encourage children to show interest in different occupations.
Over the past term children in nursery have enjoyed sharing their family scrapbooks with each other and retelling personal special events. Next half term this will be extended by developing positive attitudes towards the differences between people. We will explore different countries and cultures that exist around the world.

Physical development

Children will continue to develop a comfortable grip and good control when using pens, pencils and scissors.
We will encourage children to be as independent as possible when putting on their own coats and zipping them up.
Through ring games children will be increasingly able to use and remember sequences and patterns of movement which are related to music and rhythm.
Using the outdoor equipment children will develop the ability to match their physical skills to a range of tasks.

Phonics

We will continue to develop our phonological awareness by:

Spotting and suggesting rhyme and alliteration.
Playing a variety of initial sound games.
Engage in activities that require using the skill of oral blending and segmenting.
N2 children will continue to learn new and recap familiar phonemes.

Maths

We will be recognising at least the numerals to 5.
Correctly touch count at least 5 objects.
Building on our previous knowledge of amounts and subitising to subitise amounts to 5.
Compare amounts using the language more than and fewer than.
Recognising and continuing a simple ABAB repeating pattern.

Literacy

Children will be introduced to the different features of a book:

pictures
writing
page number
front cover
back cover
spine
blurb

Here are some books that we will be reading over the next half term:

Our key text map in Spring 1 will be 'We're going on a bear hunt' by Michael Rosen.

Have a wonderful Christmas.
