Outdoor Excursion Through the Streets of Denpasar

In preparation for our participation in a Photography Exhibition for Denpasars' 235th Anniversary, we took some of our photography workshops out of the studio and onto the streets of Denpasar.

Denpasars' inner city was a perfect urban setting amidts its decorations for the Lunar New Year celebrations.

The colours of its buildings a bright backdrop with lots of visual contrasts. The students continued to practice both roles of photographer and model, this time for candid captures in an urban setting.

Introduced to a portable flash light, they learned to balance the dark drop shadows from the sunlight with a portable flash.

Quite evidently, continuing to enjoy being in front of the camera as much as behind it.

Our first outdoor excursion into the city streets of Denpasar was a fun day out.

Seeing things in a new light through the camera is a great way to explore and appreciate the details.

We spent some time in the landmark Statue of Catur Muka. This statue is located at the crossroad in the centre of Denpasar City. Made by Gusti Nyoman Lempad, a famous and highly respected artist in Bali. This statue was made for the spread of philosophical values and the conception of leadership.

The Four-faced Statue standing on the Lotus/Tunjung/Lotus/Padma flower is the reincarnation of GURU, in the form of the embodiment of Catur GOPHALA. By taking the embodiment of the Four Faces is a symbol of the holder of Governmental Power which is depicted in his four hands.

Catur Gophala holds Aksmala/genitri, meaning that the center of everything is purity and knowledge. Whipping and Sabet mean that the government must enforce firmness and justice. Cakra means that whoever violates the laws and regulations must be punished. Sungu means government holding on to information or laws. The rope on the body is a symbol of reincarnation, meaning knowing before and after.

Catur Muka has four faces facing the four cardinal directions: Facing East (purwa) is the face of Sanghyang Iswara, meaning the decision of kamoksan or wisdom.

Sanghyang Brahma, facing south (daksina) maintains peace (eliminates all evil, thieves, enforces security and order). Sanghyang Mahadewa, facing West (pascima) representing compassion.

Sanghyang Wisnu, facing North (utara), has the power to purify the human soul "sahanning ras lara roga musna" (all disturbing defects in the world are destroyed), the people become happy, the country is safe, humans like to maintain purity and beauty, the land is prosperous peaceful.

It is stated that the ejection guides in design and its philosophical basis are: Lontar Widdhi Sastra, Gedong Wesi, Siwa Gama, Ramayana, Garuda Carita, Babad Bali, Usana Bali, Brahma Tatwa, Shiva Sesana, Niti Sastra, and Kertha Tatwa.

It is incredible, the wisdom that has been gifted to us in the centre of our city. As we spent time around it enjoying our photography workshop, we did not realise the depth of wisdom in this noble landmark. An ever present reminder of the principes of true leadership.

Pasar Badung

Pasar Badung, which is located in the Heritage Area of Jl. Gajah Mada, is the downtown area of Denpasar since the time of the Jambe Ksatrya kingdom. In terms of the cosmology of a city, Badung Market has an important role in the spatial structure of Denpasar City. Badung Market is part of the Denpasar City Catuspatha concept.

Catuspatha has four elements, namely: 1) Puri/palace as the center of government, 2) Traditional markets as the center of the economy; 3) Wantilan as a cultural center; 4) Alun-alun/public space/RTH as recreation. The catuspatha of Denpasar city is centered on the Caturmuka Statue on Jl. Gajah Mada, which is approximately 400 meters east of Badung Market.

Candid Walk in the markets.

A second excursion into Denpasar had us visit the historical building Puri Agung Jro Kuta.

A historical building complex located at Jalan Sutomo Number 38, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. This castle is the residence of the royal family who has direct lineage with the Klungkung Kingdom.

In the courtyard of one of Denpasars' historical houses Puri Agung Jro Kuta.
