Was Andrew Carnegie A Hero? By: Cody Figus

Andrew Carnegie was not a hero because of his cocky ego, not caring about his workers, and unfair business.
Andrew Carnegie was not a hero because of his cocky ego.

"I would get out of it" (Doucment C).

Andrew Carnegie is showing his off his cocky ego to his friend. He is being cocky because he is asking how much he made last month. Instead of being generous and a loyal friend, Andrew bragged about how amazing his company. He purposely asked him that to say directly to him that he would "get out of it". This shows that Andrew had a cocky ego because he thought his job and business was perfect. Nonetheless, it showed how cocky Andrew Carnegie was because he thought his company was better than everyone else.

Another reason why Andrew Carnegie was not a hero because he didn't care for his workers.

"My idea is.. too shut down and suffer let them decide by vote when they decide to go (back) to work" (Document J).

Andrew Carnegie didn't care for his workers. Once they went on strike for lower working hours and higher wages, Carnegie left the United States. He told his businessmen to say no to whatever the workers ask. Carnegie didn't care for his workers because he'd rather shut down the steel mill than raise wages. He hired pinkertons to go at night and work for the people on strike until they found out. Carnegie was a selfish greedy man that had no care for anyone besides himself.

The last reason why Carnegie was not a hero because his unfair business practices.

"Carnegie sent out a circular (notice) to the railroads, warning them that the Allegheny's methods led to defective rails and to incite alarm he implied the rails could cause fatal accidents" (Document F).

Carnegie was worried about his competitions with their new technique. Therefore, he wanted to get rid of the company so he will remain on top. Carnegie was a self-centered selfish man. He told negative things to people to help get rid of the company. Nonetheless, he brought their company and used their brilliant method.

Andrew Carnegie was anything besides a hero. He was a selfish man that had no care about anybody besides himself. Andrew Carneige was not considered a hero because of his cocky ego, not caring about his workers, and unfair business.
